About MainWP Maintenance Extension
When cleaning the database means logging into every site
Every site you maintain piles up post revisions, auto drafts, spam comments and temporary data. Cleaning them by hand means logging into each site's dashboard, opening a cleanup tool and repeating the same thing twenty times. Usually it gets done once and never touched again. MainWP Maintenance Extension moves that task to the central MainWP panel, so cleanup no longer depends on your memory.
It is an extension of the MainWP Dashboard: it does not work on its own or for a single standalone site. It works on the child sites you have already connected.
What MainWP Maintenance Extension cleans and what it optimizes
The extension does two different things, and it is worth keeping them apart:
- Cleanup: removes post revisions, auto drafts, trashed posts, spam comments and transients, across several sites at once.
- Optimization: with one click it optimizes the databases of your child sites, to reduce their size and improve read and write efficiency.
You can choose which tasks to run each time, so you are not forced to delete everything. Transients come in two degrees: remove only expired ones (a cautious cleanup) or clear them all for a fresh start. Transients are temporary data WordPress stores to speed things up, but expired and orphaned ones pile up and end up doing the opposite.
Which profile gets the most out of MainWP Maintenance
Agency with a maintenance portfolio
If you charge a monthly care plan, the database is one of those jobs that is promised and done late. Scheduling lets you set a frequency and have the MainWP Dashboard launch the tasks without your involvement.
Freelancer with few but very different sites
With five or ten client sites, the advantage is running cleanup on demand across all of them at once, for example before a migration or after a spam comment wave.
Someone running their own network of sites
If you manage your own blogs or content-heavy projects, revisions and trash grow without you noticing. Scheduling a periodic cleanup keeps the database from growing out of control.
Realistic expectations about speed
Cleaning the database can lighten it and improve response, but it is not a complete performance tool: it does not cache pages, optimize images or touch code. If a site is slow because of hosting, a heavy theme or external scripts, this extension will not fix it. Think of it as background maintenance, not a miracle remedy.
Optimization is not recommended on MariaDB
The database optimization feature is not recommended for child sites running on MariaDB. Before launching it across your whole portfolio, check which engine each host uses. Cleaning out surplus content is a separate task from that optimization.
Also, deleting is deleting: removed revisions cannot be recovered, so it is wise to have backups before the first cleanup on important sites.
Frequently asked questions
Can I schedule the tasks?
Yes. You set the frequency and the MainWP Dashboard runs them on your child sites with no manual intervention.
Do I need other plugins or APIs?
No. It integrates with the MainWP Dashboard and needs nothing else to manage the child sites.
Can I choose what gets deleted?
Yes. You select the specific tasks: revisions, auto drafts, spam, transients or others.
Does it work without MainWP?
No. It is an extension of the MainWP Dashboard and depends on it.
