About MainWP Staging Extension

Testing an update on a client's website without gambling on production

Updating a plugin on a client's website and then finding out the form no longer sends, or the menu has fallen apart, is one of those afternoons nobody wants. When you manage several websites, the problem is not knowing that you should test first: it is that setting up a staging copy for every site feels like so much hassle that the step gets skipped. MainWP Staging Extension tries to remove that friction by bringing staging environments into the same panel you already use to control your sites.

MainWP Staging Extension: the staging copy as just another child site

It is an add-on for the MainWP Dashboard that relies on the WP Staging plugin. What changes is where you work:

  • Create and monitor staging copies from the Dashboard, without logging in to each site's admin one by one.
  • Treat each staging environment as a regular MainWP child site, so you see and manage it just like the rest of your portfolio.
  • No cap on copies: you can set up as many as you need for the sites you manage with MainWP.

It serves two very specific moments: when you build or redesign a website and don't want to touch the live one, and when you need to check updates, plugins or themes before applying them for real.

Where a staging copy per client matters most

A mistake on a portfolio site is fixed with an apology. A mistake on a shop, a booking site or a membership area costs money while it is broken. That is where a staging copy stops being a luxury: you use it before updating the delicate things, not before everything. In practice, the risk tends to concentrate in a few websites and a few plugins, and those are the ones worth replicating first.

With a single tool for all of them, the workflow is easier to repeat: you create the copy, test the change, look at the result and decide. Keep in mind that each copy is another WordPress site taking up hosting space, so it is best not to leave dozens of forgotten environments around.

Decide whether testing from MainWP is enough or you need to publish with WP Staging Pro

Here is the limit that breaks the most expectations: this extension works only with the free version of WP Staging, and with it you cannot send changes from the staging copy to the live site. That step requires WP Staging Pro. If your plan was to test and publish with one click from the Dashboard, that part is not covered.

Do I need to install WP Staging separately?

Yes. It is the free plugin that creates the copies; the extension handles managing them from MainWP.

Can I move changes from the copy to the real site?

Not with this extension and the free version of WP Staging. Moving changes from staging to production requires WP Staging Pro.

Is there a maximum number of staging copies?

There is no limit on staging copies. The real ceiling will be your hosting space.

Is it useful if I only manage one website?

It is designed for people who manage sites from a MainWP Dashboard.
