About Memberpress Developer Tools
The first notice of a signup can arrive before the charge
You connect your membership to another system and grant access when the new member notice arrives. Someone registers, their payment is not accepted, and on the other side their account is already open.
In MemberPress Developer Tools, each event marks a different moment of the signup, and choosing it by name can open the door before the charge. That is why a membership integration is decided event by event and validated with a real test signup.
Developer Tools is the MemberPress add-on that adds a full REST API and webhooks. It lets you check from another service whether someone has an active membership, record payments made on another site or use MemberPress as the backend of an app.
An API to ask, webhooks to find out
- REST API: lists, creates, updates and deletes members, events, transactions, subscriptions, rules, memberships, groups, reminders and coupons.
- Webhooks: send POST requests to the URL you choose, with as many URLs as you need.
- Events page: shows an example request for each event and lets you send a test to your URLs.
- Documentation inside the plugin: API routes and events are consulted in the Developers menu of MemberPress.
- Subscription by API: another system can subscribe to webhooks with its URL and its event.
- Authentication: an API key in a header, with a
/meroute to check that it works. - Webhook key: generated automatically, can be regenerated and arrives in the
memberpress-webhook-keyheader to validate who is sending.
Forty events and two names that mislead
The list brings together 40 events for members, subscriptions, transactions, reminders, courses and gifts. Choosing the right one avoids errors that show up in no test:
- Member Added and Member Signup Completed: the first fires on registration, before payment details are accepted. The second comes with the signup complete and payment accepted. To grant access in another system, the second is the one that describes an accepted charge.
- Recurring Transaction Expired: does not indicate that a recurring subscription is expiring. The subscription expired event exists for that.
- Upgraded and Downgraded: deprecated in favor of the more specific events for changes to recurring or non-recurring.
- Before Credit Card Expires and Recurring Transaction Failed: flag cards about to expire and failed charges, useful for contacting the member from another tool.
When the test passes and the real event does not arrive
If test webhooks work and real ones do not, check the wp_mepr_jobs table for tasks stuck in pending status. The next step is WP Cron: the recommendation is to disable the one launched on page load and run a server cron every minute. MemberPress does not help with that setup, so you will need your hosting provider.
Setting up the webhook and validating the first signup
You need MemberPress installed. Then:
- Go to MemberPress, Add-ons, and click Install Add-on.
- Open Developers and add your URL in the Webhooks tab.
- Validate the webhook key header in your receiver.
- Send a test and look at the event's example request.
- Run a real test signup and confirm it arrives. If it does not, check
wp_mepr_jobsand cron.
Connecting MemberPress without programming
The add-on opens the door and documents its routes. The program that receives the webhook, stores the data and retries if something fails is on you, and among its features there is no visual automation builder.
Uncanny Automator Pro is one of the options MemberPress suggests to non-developers. AutomatorWP Webhooks sends and receives webhooks inside AutomatorWP automations. And MemberPress Pro is the main plugin this add-on works on.
Coding against the API: common cases
Do I need to know how to program?
To get real use from it, yes, or have someone who does. If not, Zapier and Uncanny Automator may be easier.
How do I authenticate to the API?
With the MEMBERPRESS-API-KEY header, the preferred method. Basic authentication also exists, but it is less secure.
Can I create a member with their membership by API?
Yes. The members route accepts a transaction that assigns the membership and can trigger the welcome email.
Can I cancel a subscription by API?
Yes. The subscription routes include cancel and expire.
