About Meow Gallery (Pro)
In a travel gallery, the most useful detail is not visible in the photo
You come back from three weeks of travel with four hundred images and publish them in a grid. They look fine, but the reader does not know which photo belongs to which place, or how they relate to one another. Sorting by date or by look leaves out what would matter most to someone following your route.
For a travel photographer, the place is part of the content, not a caption. A map layout based on GPS position lets visitors explore an album by place.
Meow Gallery Pro extends Meow Gallery with that map layout, based on the GPS position of the photos, and with three more additions: a carousel, progressive loading and animations.
Map, carousel and batch loading on top of six layouts
Meow Gallery offers the Tiles, Masonry, Justified, Square, Cascade and Horizontal layouts, and it works with its gallery block, with a shortcode or by replacing the standard WordPress gallery. Pro adds:
- Map layout: shows photos according to their GPS, designed for travel galleries. Its height is set with the
map_heightparameter. - Carousel layout: a dynamic slider that can also work as a hero.
- Infinite or lazy loading: images arrive as the visitor scrolls.
- Animations for the galleries.
Large galleries, front pages with posts and photo archives
Large galleries. With scroll loading, files arrive in batches of 12. The lightbox loads the next batch as the visitor moves through the images.
Front pages with posts. Dynamic sources create galleries that fill according to certain parameters. The posts source uses the featured images of chosen or most recent posts, and the carousel's Hero mode can overlay their title and excerpt.
Photo archives. Other sources load images by tags or from a post's attachments. With Photo Engine, also from Lightroom collections that update on sync. Collections group several galleries into a gallery of galleries.
Coordinates, protection and lightbox: what to check
The map needs photos with a GPS position. Check that your files keep that data before planning a gallery around the map, especially if you export or process them before uploading.
Its features do not include watermarks, a print shop, private client galleries or image compression.
The lightbox is chosen separately. It accepts the one you prefer, with Meow Lightbox as the recommended option.
If you change plugins one day, Meow Gallery is designed without lock-in: you can switch back to other galleries at any time. The meow="false" parameter returns a specific gallery to the WordPress one.
Requirements and a first map gallery
Meow Gallery needs WordPress 6.0 or higher and PHP 8.1 or higher. To get started:
- Install the plugin.
- Select a small group of photos with GPS data.
- Create the gallery and apply the map layout.
- Adjust the height and check that each image appears in its place.
- Test the result on a phone before loading the whole album.
Other galleries for photographers in the catalogue
FooGallery Premium is aimed at large catalogues, with live filtering and search, dynamic galleries and video alongside photos. Modula Pro is based on a drag-and-drop grid builder, and its extensions include video, watermarks, albums and image proofing. Envira Gallery is another option, with its own add-ons in the catalogue such as watermarking or photo proofing.
To add links to Meow Gallery images there is Gallery Custom Links Pro, which works with it.
Pro layouts, batches, GPS and sitemap
Which layouts are Pro only?
The carousel and the map. Pro also adds infinite or lazy loading and animations.
Where does the map get each photo's position?
From its GPS data. The map layout is based on that information.
How many images load at a time?
With scroll loading, files arrive in batches of 12.
Does it help images appear in the sitemap?
Yes. It integrates automatically with sitemaps and works with Yoast SEO and others.
Can it be combined with Lightroom?
Yes, it is compatible with Photo Engine for organising media and syncing with Lightroom.
