About Meta Box Admin Columns
For people who already store their data with Meta Box, not for those looking for a table editor
You open «All Books» or your client list and all you see is a title and a date. The fields you worked so hard to define are there, but to check them you have to open each record one by one. Meta Box Admin Columns solves exactly that: it brings your custom fields out into columns in the admin list screen.
It fits if you create your fields with Meta Box, because it is an extension of that plugin and is made for its users. It is not for you if you expect this:
- It to work without Meta Box: it is an add-on, it does not work on its own.
- Editing or exporting data from the table itself: another extension covers that, MB Admin Columns Integration.
- Seeing term or user data without further preparation: to create those fields you need MB Term Meta and MB User Meta.
From a book list with title and date to one with author, publisher and pages
By default, WordPress shows very little on its list screens. With a Book content type, it makes sense to see author, publisher, number of pages and category without opening each entry. You say which field you want to show and the plugin takes care of the rest.
You decide how each column looks:
- Position: before or after an existing column, or replacing it, and you can order them among themselves.
- Title: whatever you want, not the internal name of the field.
- Output: customizable, with your own HTML before and after the column content.
It works with all the standard custom field types. It adds styles that match the WordPress interface, so the columns do not look like a foreign addition.
Sortable, searchable columns: Meta Box Admin Columns in a large catalog
Showing the data is only half the job. When there are hundreds of entries, what you appreciate is being able to sort by number of pages or search for a value stored in a field. Both options are enabled per column, so not every column has to be sortable or searchable.
The plugin is lightweight and needs only a single parameter for the basics. It is a tool for developers.
Terms, users and custom tables: what you need installed
Columns are not limited to posts and content types: you can also show extra information in the terms list and the users list. For that, those fields must already exist, and they are created with MB Term Meta and MB User Meta.
If you store data in custom tables with MB Custom Table, the plugin can also show, search and sort that data. It is a more advanced case: do not plan for it if your fields live in the usual meta tables.
Filtering posts by a custom taxonomy
Besides columns, the plugin adds filters by your own taxonomies to the list: you mark the taxonomy as filterable and it handles the rest.
If you only want that feature and no columns, there is a standalone plugin called Admin Taxonomy Filter; you do not need to load this one for that.
Questions before installing Meta Box Admin Columns
Does it work with fields from other plugins?
It is optimized for fields created with Meta Box. If you use another field system, do not count on it without testing first.
Can I change the order of the columns?
Yes. You can place each column before or after another, or replace an existing one.
Can I edit values from the list?
Not with this plugin. Editing and exporting belong to MB Admin Columns Integration.
Does it work for WooCommerce products?
There are examples of custom columns for WooCommerce products, as long as the data is in Meta Box fields. Check it with your own fields.
