About PMPRO Pay by Check
Charging dues by bank transfer, Venmo or check without letting anyone in too early
A membership site is usually built around instant card payments, but not every sale works that way. There are high-ticket courses where gateway fees hurt, local associations whose members prefer to hand over their dues in person, and clients with internal rules who only pay against an invoice. PMPRO Pay by Check is the Paid Memberships Pro add-on that adds a manual payment method for those cases.
The underlying point: in these businesses the money arrives through a channel the website cannot see. What shapes the experience is not the checkout, but who confirms the payment and how long that takes.
What members see when they choose manual payment with PMPRO Pay by Check
On the checkout page, users can choose between card or PayPal and the manual option. If they pick the latter, they see your instructions in three places: the checkout, the membership confirmation page and the confirmation email.
- Custom label: you can name the method "Check", "Venmo", "Cash" or "Direct Deposit".
- Free-form instructions: this is where you put your Venmo username, bank details or the mailing address for checks.
- Pending order: the first order is created with "pending" status and the member gets no access until you approve it.
Confirming payments by hand: three ways and a grace period worth deciding on
When the money arrives, an administrator or membership manager marks the order as paid ("success" status). Only then is the checkout completed and access granted. There are three ways to do it:
- From the orders list, with the quick "Mark Paid" action when hovering over the row.
- From the order edit page, with a button.
- From that same page, by editing the order form.
Each renewal generates a new pending order, so the manual work repeats every cycle. For each level you can set whether manual payment is the only option, an alternative or required, plus the days for renewal notices, reminders after a missed payment and membership cancellation.
The grace period for existing customers
Anyone who already has a completed order from the past may keep access while waiting for their next payment. New users, however, get in only once their first order is in success status. If you want to cut access as soon as the term ends, set the level's cancellation value to 0. For regular customers it usually makes sense to leave a few days of margin.
It needs Paid Memberships Pro and does not automate collection: questions before you decide
It is an add-on: it does not work alone and requires Paid Memberships Pro to be installed and active. It also does not reconcile payments or detect deposits in your bank: confirmation is always manual. If you receive many payments each month, that workload will grow with you.
Can I combine it with Stripe or another gateway?
Yes. You can keep another gateway as the primary one and have manual payment appear as an alternative on the levels you choose.
Do I have to allow manual payment on every level?
No, it is set level by level: manual only, optional or required.
Does it work for collecting through Venmo or bank transfer?
Yes, the name says check, but the label and instructions are free. Even so, the add-on does not process the payment: it only shows your instructions.
