Your videos rack up plays, but does anyone reach the end?
You publish a product video, a lesson or a demo, and all you see is the play counter in the player. That number tells you who pressed play, not who stayed. MonsterInsights Media Tracking Addon lets you see that difference without leaving WordPress.
From activating the addon to reading the report: a walkthrough with MonsterInsights Media Tracking Addon
Picture a service page with a YouTube video, a Vimeo video and a third one uploaded to your own media library. Here is how it would go:
- Step 1, start from the base: it is an add-on for MonsterInsights, so you need that plugin installed and connected to Google Analytics. On its own it does not work.
- Step 2, choose what to measure: you activate the addon, open the Publisher settings, enable video tracking and tick the video types you want to monitor. No Google Tag Manager and no code needed.
- Step 3, read the media report: in Insights > Reports > Media each video appears with its total plays, average watch time, average percentage watched and completion rate.
- Step 4, cross it with Analytics: the same data reaches Google Analytics as events, under Engagement > Events, in case you want to analyze it alongside the rest of your traffic.
- Step 5, avoid logging in every day: you can receive automatic email reports to follow how engagement with your videos evolves.
All three formats (YouTube, Vimeo and HTML5) are measured the same way and appear in the same report, so you can compare a video hosted on a platform with one hosted on your own site without piecing together data from different tools. What the addon does not do: it does not edit your videos or explain why someone left. It gives you the number, and the diagnosis is up to you.
500 plays with a 15% completion rate: the problem is the content
A video with 500 plays and a 15% completion rate and another with 100 plays and 80% call for opposite actions. In the first, people press play and leave: the content does not hold them, and moving it somewhere more visible will not fix it. The second one hooks viewers, but hardly anyone sees it, so what it needs is visibility. By showing plays, average percentage watched and completion together, the report keeps you from redoing what already worked or promoting what does not hold attention.
It also helps you spot which pages with video perform best and whether finishing the video coincides with purchases or form submissions. That comparison is what justifies (or not) continuing to produce a given type of video.
Common questions before activating it
Do I need Google Tag Manager or a developer?
No. Tracking is turned on from the MonsterInsights settings and works without code or manual tags.
Which videos does it measure?
YouTube videos, Vimeo videos and HTML5 videos uploaded directly to WordPress. All three share the same report and metrics.
Where do I see the results?
In Insights > Reports > Media inside the WordPress dashboard, and also as events in Google Analytics.
Does it work without MonsterInsights?
No. It is a MonsterInsights addon and needs the main plugin.
