About Newsletter Mailgun Addon

Newsletter Mailgun Addon changes the sending channel: Newsletter emails go out through Mailgun, an email delivery service.

A blog list that grows and gets dirty on its own

People with a blog and subscribers rarely look at their list until something breaks. Addresses get abandoned, mailboxes fill up, people change jobs. Every send to an address that no longer exists is wasted, and the list degrades without you noticing. This addon includes bounce detection for that problem.

Walkthrough: from an unverified domain to a newsletter sent with Mailgun

This is the real path, including the points where people get stuck:

  • First, the domain in Mailgun. Mailgun works with domains, so you must follow its activation and verification procedure. Until it shows as verified and ready to use, there is nothing to connect.
  • Then, the API key. In the Mailgun console, under the Settings/API key menu, the private key is created with the "Add new key" button.
  • Next, the setup on your blog. In the plugin's admin panel you enter two things: the API key and the domain you verified.
  • Finally, the region. You have to choose the right one for that domain. Mailgun offers a data center in Europe for those who need to deal with GDPR, and in its console a small flag shows whether the domain is registered in Europe or the US.

The sender must match the verified domain

You can only send from addresses on the domain you verified. If you verified mydomain.com, you can send as [email protected]. If you verified a subdomain such as mail.mydomain.com, your senders must use that subdomain, for example [email protected]. If your usual contact address is on another domain, you will have to change it in the newsletter.

The daily bounce cleanup: stop writing to people who are gone

The integration includes bounce detection: a daily list cleaning process marks unreachable addresses as "bounced" so Newsletter stops contacting them. That way you don't spend resources and money on sends that go nowhere.

What it needs to work

It is an addon: it does not work on its own and needs the Newsletter plugin installed. It also needs a Mailgun account with a verified domain of your own.

Frequently asked questions about Newsletter Mailgun Addon

Can I send from any email address?

No. Only from addresses on the domain (or subdomain) you verified in Mailgun.

Does it work if I have subscribers in Europe?

Mailgun offers a European data center and the addon lets you choose the region when you set it up. That choice does not replace your GDPR obligations: it is just a technical option.

Why does the API key give me an error?

Check that it is a private key created with "Add new key", that the domain matches the verified one and that the selected region is the one for that domain.

What happens to addresses that bounce?

They are marked as bounced in a daily process and Newsletter stops sending them emails.
