A news site is won or lost on the article page, not on the homepage
Building a news outlet or a content-heavy blog often ends with a beautiful homepage, articles that load slowly on mobile and ads stuck wherever they fit, not where they get seen. PenNews AMP is a magazine theme built for that case: it supports Google AMP and Facebook Instant Articles, and treats ad space as part of the design.
One thing should be clear from the start: almost nobody enters through the homepage. People arrive from Google or social media on a specific article, on mobile, and leave when they finish it. That is why the most useful approach is to follow the real process, from demo to published article, and see what the theme solves at each step and where its job ends.
Steps 1 and 2 with PenNews: from the imported demo to a homepage with hierarchy
You start by importing a demo with one click, and the typical mistake is leaving it as it is. Keep the structure and adapt it: the theme is managed with WPBakery Page Builder and more than 600 Customizer options, so you can change sections without touching code.
- Headers and menus: more than 10 header styles, mega menus by columns or by category, and sticky or non-sticky navigation.
- Sliders and grids: more than 28 featured slider styles and more than 10 big grids for the story of the day.
- Content blocks: more than 40, to show each category without always repeating the same list.
- Widgets: authors box, popular categories, video playlist, Instagram, Pinterest, social counters, weather or login form.
One limit to keep in mind: the builder is WPBakery, not Elementor, so if your team works with Elementor it will have to learn another tool. The theme also includes plugins such as Slider Revolution, Advanced Custom Fields Pro, Layer Slider or Master Slider: do not install another copy of the same ones yourself.
Common questions before choosing PenNews
Is it only for news?
No. It has portfolio layouts (masonry and grid) and is compatible with WooCommerce, bbPress, BuddyPress and The Events Calendar. But the shop, forum or calendar comes from each plugin; the theme only styles them.
Can it be used in several languages?
Yes: it is compatible with WPML and Polylang, it is ready for RTL languages, and it lets you translate the theme texts quickly.
Can I use my own fonts?
Yes, both Google fonts and fonts you upload yourself, and you can adjust the type and size for each element.
Is it GDPR compliant?
It is presented as compatible with the EU policy, but compliance depends on how you configure your site and on your legal and cookie texts. The theme does not handle it for you.
Step 3: the article, with styles for each type of story
This is where the real value of a news theme lies. You get more than 10 post styles, six of them with a parallax effect, so a long feature does not look the same as a short note. Articles can load more content infinitely, which lengthens the session of someone who arrived through a single link.
If you write reviews, the theme supports three scoring systems: stars, percentage or points. The schema markup covers articles, breadcrumbs, reviews and recipes, and it is compatible with the usual SEO plugins. It also includes lazy loading for images and is compatible with caching plugins, which you notice when traffic grows.
Step 4: ads and AMP, and what to test before publishing
Ads are placed by drag and drop, with unlimited ad spaces, In-Feed ads in all layouts and support for affiliates. That way you decide whether the banner goes next to the headline, between stories or in the sticky sidebar, without touching templates.
Support for Google AMP and Facebook Instant Articles is the big asset for an audience that arrives from mobile. Before launching, open an article from the demo on your phone in its AMP version and check whether your ads and blocks look the way you expect.
And a final clarification: PenNews organizes the space, but it does not bring in advertisers or traffic. That still depends on your content and your strategy.
