About PMPRO Limit Post Views Addon
Giving away a few reads to sell the subscription
A blog or a digital magazine lives in an awkward balance: if everything is locked, neither Google nor the casual reader gets to see anything; if everything is open, nobody has a reason to pay. PMPRO Limit Post Views Addon works in that middle ground with metered access: the visitor reads a few protected posts and, on reaching the limit, is sent to the page you choose, usually the membership signup page.
Someone who keeps coming back has already shown interest. That returning reader is the one worth nudging to create an account, far more than the one who arrives once from a search engine and leaves.
How it counts reads and when it redirects
The plugin stores a cookie on each visitor and adds up the protected posts they open. From Memberships > Limit Post Views you set:
- How many free views non-members get (visitors or registered users without an active level).
- A different limit for each membership level, if you need it.
- The counting period: per hour, day, week or month.
- The page readers are redirected to when the limit runs out.
For members, the counter only runs when they try to open something their level does not include. Whatever they already have access to opens without using up views.
Let Google index without handing everything to the reader
If you set non-member views to 1, search engine bots can access your posts and index them. Keep in mind that the same value is what a human reader will see for free, so decide whether it fits your strategy.
The cookie counter is bypassed with another browser
This is the most important point before setting up the paywall. Who handles what:
- The plugin handles: counting views per visitor, per level and per period, and redirecting when the allowance runs out.
- You cover with Paid Memberships Pro: it must be installed and active.
- You cover: protecting the posts.
- You cover with code: by default it only meters posts (post). For pages or other content types you need a filter called pmprolpv_post_types.
- You cover with code: a remaining-views notice, a banner or a popup. There are JavaScript filters for it, but it is not a settings screen option.
- Nobody does it: truly blocking access. Anyone who switches computers or browsers, or uses incognito mode, gets around the limit.
The goal is not to shut people out, but to gently encourage regular readers to sign up.
Questions before activating PMPRO Limit Post Views Addon
Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?
No. It is an add-on for that plugin and needs it installed and active.
Can I give some levels more reads than others?
Yes, the limit is defined per membership level, in addition to the one for non-members.
Does it work for pages or custom content types?
Yes, but with a bit of code: add the pmprolpv_post_types filter with the types you want to meter.
Is it a secure protection against readers who don't pay?
No. Since it relies on cookies, it is easy to bypass. Use it as a signup incentive, not as a lock.
