About Popup Builder Login
Your visitor was reading something when you asked them to sign in
Someone opens an article, clicks sign in and lands on a separate login screen. They type their password and they are no longer where they were: now they have to find the page they were reading all over again.
A separate login screen takes the person away from what they were doing; a popup over the page leaves that content underneath. That is the first thing to decide, before touching colors or wording.
Login Popup is an extension for Popup Builder, the WordPress popup plugin. It places the login form inside a popup, over the page, and lets you choose what happens when the person signs in.
What happens right after sign-in
The After successful login option takes one of these actions:
- Refresh: reloads the page holding the popup once the form is submitted.
- Redirect to URL: sends the person to a link you enter, in the same tab or a new one.
- Open popup: opens another popup that you pick from a list.
- Hide popup: closes the popup after login.
For anyone already signed in, the Already logged in message setting defines what they will see.
The look and wording of each part of the form
- Background: color, transparency and inner spacing of the form.
- Fields: username, password and the optional remember me box, with editable labels and placeholders.
- Inputs: width, height, border width and colors for background, border, text and placeholder.
- Button: width, height, title, in-progress title, background color and text color.
- Messages: the required-field notice and the error for a wrong username or password.
Reserved home pages and visitors without an account
The extension also works for a password-protected site: a compact form visitors fill in to get access, or a popup placed on the home page to limit entry for people who are not registered.
If you plan to use it that way, open the site in a private window and check whether someone without an account can close the popup and keep reading. Preventing a popup from closing is part of the advanced options in the PRO edition of Popup Builder.
It only serves people who already have an account. Its fields are the three listed above. For a new visitor to register without leaving the page there is the Registration Popup extension, meant to be used alongside this one.
It does not work alone. It needs Popup Builder installed, because it adds a popup type to that plugin.
Display rules belong to the base plugin. Opening the popup on hover, on click or on page load with a delay are Popup Builder functions, and some targeting belongs to its paid side.
Popup Builder active and a first popup
With Popup Builder and the extension active, follow these steps:
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Popup Builder and click Add New.
- Choose the Log in type from the menu bar.
- Adjust fields, colors and error messages.
- In After successful login, choose the action that leaves the person where you need them.
- Decide which page it appears on, and test the login with a real account and with a wrong password.
For shops, or for login and registration together
Popup Builder is the base this extension needs. If you run a shop, YITH Easy Login & Register Popup brings login, registration and password recovery into one popup for WooCommerce, with sign-in through Facebook or Google. If your theme is OceanWP, the catalog also has OceanWP Popup Login.
Questions about the login popup
Does it work without Popup Builder?
No. It is an extension for that plugin and needs it installed.
Can it open another popup after login?
Yes. The Open popup action opens the popup you pick from the list.
Can I send each person to a different page?
Redirect to URL takes one link per popup. For different destinations, you can create separate popups and test that on your site.
Can the error messages be changed?
Yes. You can define the required-field notice and the error for a wrong username or password.
What does someone already signed in see?
The message you define in Already logged in message.
Does it register visitors?
That is what Registration Popup is for, a separate extension that shows the WordPress sign-up form in a popup.
