A popup in the same old grey box gets closed by reflex
Anyone who installs popups makes a living by interrupting visitors, and visitors know it: as soon as a box that looks like an ad appears, their hand goes straight to the X. If the popup looks like the rest of your brand, with your illustration and your palette, it reads as part of the page and not as a nuisance. That is what Popup Maker - Advanced Theme Builder solves: it adds background images to different elements of the popup from the Popup Maker theme editor.
Image in the container, in the overlay and even on the close button
It is an extension of Popup Maker, not a standalone plugin: it extends the theme editor of the base plugin, which must be installed. This is what it adds:
- Container background: use a design made in Photoshop or Canva as the background, for example an announcement that is already laid out.
- Overlay image: the layer behind the popup can carry an image instead of a flat color.
- Close button image: replace the standard X with your own graphic.
- Color over the image: adjust the overlay color and opacity to darken or tint the background so the text stays readable.
- Your own color palettes: save your colors to reuse them while designing.
- "Match Element" size: makes the image take the exact width and height of the element.
It helps to be clear about the scope: it only touches appearance. You supply the image (it is not a design library), and it adds no triggers, display conditions or analytics; those still depend on Popup Maker.
Questions before uploading your first background
Does it work without Popup Maker?
No. It adds options to the Popup Maker theme editor, so the base plugin needs to be active.
Can I use a Canva or Photoshop design?
Yes. Export it as an image and upload it as the background of whichever element you want.
Do PNG files with transparency work?
Yes, and it is one of the best things it offers: you combine the image's transparency with the overlay color and opacity to get layered effects.
Can I replace the close X with an image?
Yes, the close button accepts a background image just like the other elements.
Transparent PNGs let the design breathe
A flat background with text on top is what any popup does. The difference appears when you play with layers: a PNG with transparent areas over a dark overlay, or an image in the overlay with a color veil so it does not compete with your message. The goal is for the visitor to stop and read what you say before thinking about closing.
That said, a very busy image swallows the text. If the headline or the button is hard to read, raise the opacity of the overlaid color before changing the design.
Backgrounds are set in the Popup Maker theme editor
The background options appear in the theme editor. Before you start, prepare images with proportions close to those of the element, and test the popup on small screens: a design that looks great on desktop may get cropped on mobile. If an image does not fit, try the "Match Element" option to adjust it to the element's width and height.
