About Product Filters for WooCommerce

A filter is only as good as your catalog's attributes

When a store grows from a few dozen products to hundreds, customers stop browsing categories and start bouncing: they arrive, can't find their size, their color or their price range, and leave. Product Filters for WooCommerce adds AJAX-powered filters so shoppers can narrow the listing without waiting for another page to load.

But the plugin won't organize your catalog for you. If your attributes are half-finished, with the same color spelled three different ways or categories that overlap, the filters will show that mess as it is. Before configuring anything, spend some time cleaning up attributes and taxonomies: that's where the real work is.

Filtering, sorting and paginating without reloading the page

The filters work on the data WooCommerce already has. You can filter by:

  • Categories and tags
  • Attributes and taxonomies
  • Price
  • Stock level

Pagination and sorting also happen without reloading the page, so customers don't lose the filters they just selected. The filter options are also responsive and show product counts, so you can see in advance how many results each option gives. Product thumbnails also adapt to the device.

Slider, checkboxes or color list: choose according to what you sell

The plugin offers several filter elements, and it's best not to use them all at once:

  • Price slider
  • Color list
  • Checkboxes and buttons
  • Dropdown and text list

To place them you have the «Products Filter» and «Notes for Product Filters» widgets, plus shortcodes and integration with WooCommerce's product shortcodes.

Polylang is not supported

Before deciding, separate what is already solved from what you'll have to cover yourself:

  • Already solved: AJAX filtering by categories, attributes, tags, taxonomies, price and stock; pagination and sorting without reloading; product counts; several element types; widgets and shortcodes.
  • You'll cover separately: translating the filters if your store is multilingual with Polylang, which is not supported. In that case you'll need another solution.
  • You'll check yourself: how it behaves with your theme and your hosting. Install it in a test environment first and make sure the store loads properly before going live.
  • You'll do by hand: organizing attributes and categories so the filters make sense.

It isn't a text search engine either, and it doesn't replace good menu design: it's an add-on for narrowing product listings.

Frequently asked questions about Product Filters for WooCommerce

Does the page reload every time the customer selects a filter?

No. Filtering, pagination and sorting use AJAX and update the listing without reloading.

Can I filter by price and by stock?

Yes. You can filter by price, with a slider if you like, and by stock level.

Can I place it somewhere other than the sidebar?

Yes. Besides the widgets, it includes shortcodes that integrate with product shortcodes.

Does it work for a multilingual store with Polylang?

It is not supported. If your store depends on Polylang, look for another option for the filters.
