About Registration and Login with Mobile Phone Number
When customers abandon because they can't remember their password
An online store loses sales at a very silly point: the customer wants to buy, can't remember which email they signed up with, requests a password reset, the email is slow and the purchase is left half done. Registration and Login with Mobile Phone Number changes that step: the customer types their mobile number, receives a one-time code (OTP) and logs in or registers with it.
Here the mobile phone, which the customer always has at hand, acts as the key.
How Registration and Login with Mobile Phone Number works
- New registration: after verifying the code, the customer chooses "Register as a new user" and enters their email.
- Customers you already have: they can link their phone to their existing account with "Link phone to existing account". For them you can choose whether they verify with OTP or with a password.
- Old form: you can hide it so that only mobile login remains.
- Login before checkout: you can force login on the checkout page, and the customer's data is retrieved when they log in from there.
- Country restriction: limit phone login to certain countries.
- A button made to fit: change the color and text of the "Log in with mobile" button so it matches your theme.
User data is saved in the WooCommerce users section, so you don't need a parallel account system.
The code is sent by an SMS gateway that you have to hire yourself
This is the limit that surprises people most: the plugin does not send the messages on its own. You must choose one of the three supported SMS gateways: Firebase, Twilio or MSG91, and set it up. Each has its own sign-up and its own way of charging, so check which one covers your customers' countries well before deciding.
Nor is it a risk-free system: if the customer changes number or doesn't receive the SMS, they will need another way in. So it is worth thinking about whether you leave the classic form visible or hide it completely. Also, hiding it leaves no alternative for anyone who doesn't want to give their phone number.
Frequently asked questions
Does the customer have to create an account before using their phone?
No. They enter their number, verify the OTP and log in. If they are new, they complete the registration with their email.
Can already registered customers log in with their phone?
Yes. They can link their number to their account and, in the settings, you choose whether registered users verify with OTP or with a password.
Does it help with fake registrations?
Every registration requires verifying a code received on a phone, which reduces spam and fake accounts, although it does not replace other security measures.
Does it work with my theme?
It is compatible with Storefront, Avada, Flatsome, Porto, Woodmart, the default WooCommerce theme and Divi, and with multisite and HPOS. With other themes, try it in the demo.
It is set up from the WooCommerce settings
Everything is activated in WooCommerce > Settings > Login with phone. Before opening it to real customers, have your chosen SMS gateway ready, decide which countries you allow and whether you hide the classic form. Run a complete test with your own mobile: a new registration, linking an existing account and login from the checkout page.
