About Self-service Dashboard for WooCommerce Subscriptions

The cancellation you make hard comes back as a chargeback

It is what hardly anybody calculates when deciding that cancelling has to go through email or a phone call, and it is worth seeing whole.

The retention logic looks reasonable: if cancelling takes a little effort, some people stay. And some do stay, that is true. What does not get counted is what the others do.

Somebody who wants to leave and cannot find the button does three things, and all three cost you. They dispute it with their bank, and a chargeback costs a fee, counts against you with the gateway and sometimes you lose it. They write a review saying it is impossible to cancel, which is among the most damaging reviews because it describes behaviour rather than opinion. And they never come back, nor does anybody they tell.

Self-service Dashboard puts a simple interface over WooCommerce Subscriptions so the customer manages their own.

What it does

  • A self-management panel for the customer, over the subscriptions system you already have.
  • The customer manages their own subscription, without writing or calling.
  • A simple interface, which is precisely what the standard panel lacks.

The law already settled this across much of the world

Worth knowing because it stops being a strategy decision and becomes a compliance one.

In the European Union and in a growing number of countries, cancelling has to be as easy as signing up. If the sign-up took two clicks on the website, cancellation cannot require a call during office hours or a letter. There is specific regulation on this with penalties attached.

Put another way: self-service cancellation is ceasing to be a courtesy. And since it has to be provided anyway, it is worth providing it well and getting something out of it.

The feature that genuinely retains: pausing

Here is the interesting part, and it is counterintuitive.

Plenty of people who cancel have not tired of your product: they are having a bad month. They are going away, an unexpected expense came up, they will not use it this quarter. When the only visible option is cancelling, they cancel. And signing up again afterwards requires a fresh decision hardly anybody takes.

If on that screen there is a pause for two months button beside the cancel one, a significant share press pause. You have not lost the customer, you have lost two payments. And that ratio is vastly better than a hidden cancel button gives you.

The same with downgrading. Somebody who was leaving altogether may stay on the small plan if you put it in front of them. It is smaller recurring income, which still beats zero.

And the piece that closes the circle: ask the reason on cancellation, with three options and a free field. It is the best information you will receive about your business, and you only get it if the cancellation passes through your site rather than an email nobody classifies.

Requirements

It needs WordPress, WooCommerce and WooCommerce Subscriptions. It is a layer on top: without the subscriptions system underneath it does nothing.

Alternatives in the catalogue

The base is WooCommerce Subscriptions, and without it this does not work.

If you are still deciding how to collect the fee, Paid Member Subscriptions builds the membership on its own with its own customer panel, and WooCommerce Memberships handles deciding who sees what by plan.

If you sell consumables that repeat, conversion rises a great deal by letting the choice happen on the product page: Buy Once or Subscribe puts the one-off or subscribe option where the decision gets made.

And for service businesses on a fee, which is where this fits best, it is worth seeing how Poolax and Landscop frame it: a monthly contract rather than a one-off service.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on its own?
No. It is a layer over WooCommerce Subscriptions and needs it installed.

Will I lose customers by making cancellation easy?
Fewer than with hard cancellation, which generates chargebacks and bad reviews.

Is online cancellation compulsory?
In the European Union and in more places every year, cancelling has to be as easy as signing up.

What retains better than hiding the button?
Offering to pause the subscription or downgrade on the same screen where cancellation happens.

Is asking the reason worthwhile?
Yes. It is the best information about your business and you only get it if cancellation passes through your site.

Which businesses does it suit?
Any with a recurring fee: maintenance services, memberships and subscription boxes.
