About The Events Calendar – Filter Bar
Every filter you turn on promises something about your events
When a calendar grows from a few dates to hundreds, visitors stop strolling through it. They want to know what is on Saturday afternoon in their city and what it costs, and if they have to open month after month to find out, they leave without seeing the event that suited them.
Filter Bar adds to The Events Calendar a bar for narrowing down what appears on the calendar page. That bar works with what is already loaded, which is why every filter you turn on is a promise about your data. An organizer filter only helps if events have an organizer. The country, city and state or province filters only include data from published venues assigned to a past, present or future event.
The useful decision, then, is made by looking at your events: turn on what your event records can support and leave the rest off until they can.
The filters you can put on the bar
- Classification: category, tags and featured events.
- Place: venue, country, city and state or province.
- Organizer and price: organizer and cost.
- Timing: day and time.
- Condition: event status.
Out of the box only category, tags, venue, featured events and cost are active. The rest are added from the settings, and you can show all of them or only the ones you choose.
Horizontal or beside the calendar
By default the bar sits horizontally above the calendar. The vertical option moves it beside the calendar. In the horizontal layout it can also stay collapsed until the visitor opens it with a link that shows the filters. On mobile the filters always start closed, whatever that setting says.
- Order: active filters are dragged to change their position.
- Cost: shown as a slider or as checkboxes, and you decide whether it includes free events.
- Links: each filter is appended to the calendar URL, so you can share an already filtered view.
On a translated site, part of a filter title can stay in English. Titles are generated programmatically and translation files do not fix them, so the right text goes in the title field of each filter.
Pieces some filters depend on
Filter Bar is an add-on for The Events Calendar and is not integrated with other calendar plugins. It also does not create events or change how they are managed: it only acts on how they are found.
- Your own filters: creating them requires Events Calendar Pro, as do the series and additional fields options.
- Virtual events: that filter and the Moved Online status need the virtual events feature, which is not part of the base calendar.
- Distance: it appears when the visitor uses location search and requires a valid Google Maps API key.
From activation to the first published bar
You need The Events Calendar installed with events loaded. With that, the route is short:
- Activate Filter Bar and go to Events, Settings, Filters.
- Choose the horizontal or vertical layout and, if horizontal, whether the bar starts collapsed.
- Tick in the available filters the ones your events can back up.
- Drag the active filters into the order you prefer and correct their titles.
- Press the save button and check the bar on the calendar and on a phone.
When what is missing goes beyond filtering
If you need your own filters, Events Calendar Pro is the piece that enables them. If your calendar should grow with outside contributions, Community Events belongs to the same family and revolves around community submissions, which you approve.
If you are still choosing a calendar plugin, EventON is another ecosystem, with month, agenda and tile views. And if what needs filtering is posts or products rather than events, WP Grid Builder builds grids with facets on taxonomies, post fields or custom fields.
Common questions about Filter Bar
Does it work without The Events Calendar?
No. It is designed specifically for that plugin and has not been integrated with other calendars.
Can I send someone an already filtered calendar?
Yes. Filters are appended to the calendar URL, and that address can be shared.
Why does a title appear in English on a translated site?
Because titles are generated programmatically. You fix it by typing the text in the filter title field.
