It is not coincidence or bad taste: it is that everybody builds with the same set of pieces. The builder ships thirty-odd widgets, and past that the options run out. The result is a family resemblance recognisable three seconds after landing on the page.

When it pays

If you want the site not to look like a template. That is its ground: the effects and the less common widgets are what breaks the family resemblance.

If you are stacking loose plugins. Once you are carrying three or four small add-ons to plug gaps, consolidating usually works out better on price and on maintenance.

And the warning that comes with any big toolbox: having 120 widgets is no reason to use them. Switch on what the project needs and leave the rest off; anything else is weight and options that confuse whoever maintains the site later.

The code is distributed under the GPL licence and its use is free. Updates, support and activation against the maker's servers are separate services contracted with them. They are not the same thing, and buying one is not buying the other.
