About Ultimate Member Real-time Notifications Addon

Every notice has two switches and the second one is not yours

You leave every notification type on in your community and expect each member to receive them. A member opens their notifications page, turns off the ones they do not care about and stops seeing them. You offered the notice, but the final decision belongs to each person.

In Real-time Notifications, what you turn on in the admin is what you offer, and each member decides how much of that offer they receive.

Real-time Notifications is an Ultimate Member extension that tells members about what happens around their profile and posts, through instant Ajax notifications. Each member has their own page to review past notifications.

What it notifies and how it is controlled

  • Role change: it notifies the member when their role changes.
  • Comments: it notifies when someone comments on one of their posts or replies to one of their comments.
  • Profile views: it notifies when another member views their profile and, separately, when a guest does.
  • bbPress: it notifies when someone replies to them in a topic they created or in any specific topic.
  • With other extensions: with User Reviews, it notifies when someone leaves a review or rating; with myCRED, it notifies of points received from another user or for completing a specific action.
  • Configurable delay: you control the time between checks for Ajax notifications.
  • Admin settings: you turn notification types on and off.
  • Member control: each user chooses which notifications stay on and can delete them.
  • Browser tab: it shows the number of notifications, for example (5).

One use: a community with forums and profile views

Picture a community with bbPress forums where members expect replies to their topics. The reply notice on their own topics brings them back to the conversation without checking the forum by hand.

Turn on profile view notices only if they add value: in a community with a lot of activity they can crowd the feed. Take it as a first idea and adjust it to your community's pace.

Limits of Real-time Notifications

  • Review and points notices depend on other extensions. Without User Reviews or myCRED, those types do not work.
  • It asks for stable hosting. If the server is stretched, increase the delay between checks.
  • Ultimate Member is required. It is an extension of that platform, not a standalone plugin.
  • Among its features there are no email notices.

First steps with Real-time Notifications

You need Ultimate Member installed. For forum notices, bbPress; for reviews or points, the matching extension.

  1. Install the extension with the WordPress installer and activate it.
  2. Open the extension settings and turn on only the types you want to offer.
  3. Adjust the delay for Ajax notifications.

Alternatives in the catalog for notifications

If you are looking for more pieces for Ultimate Member, the catalog has the Ultimate Member extension bundle. For notices tied to points, look at myCRED Notifications Plus, and for notices in BuddyPress communities, GamiPress BuddyPress Notifications.

Answers about Real-time Notifications

Can a member turn off notices they do not want?

Yes. Each user controls which notifications are on, and can delete them.

Do review notices work on their own?

No. Review and rating notices require the User Reviews extension, and points notices require myCRED.

Does it notify about visits from people without an account?

Yes. There is a specific notice for when a guest views the member's profile.

What do I do if my server is slow?

Increase the delay between notification checks. This kind of notice needs stable hosting.
