About Ultimate Member Social Login

One-click signup can leave you with empty profiles

A member site lives on what its profiles say. The directory is useful if each entry carries the city, the specialty or the job title. And that is exactly where the temptation appears: drop the long form, add a Google button and let people in without typing anything.

More people get in, with less data. Every field you stop asking for at registration is a field the social network is unlikely to give you, because this extension imports only basic information. The real decision with Social Login is which part of the form deserves to stay.

That is what its two paths are for. With two steps, the person identifies through their network and completes the required fields still missing. With one, they are registered immediately, without seeing that form.

Social buttons on Ultimate Member forms

  • Networks: X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google, Discord, TwitchTV and GitHub, each with its own switch. More than twenty additional providers are hidden and are enabled separately.
  • Forms: buttons on login and registration forms, with a global setting and a per-form exception.
  • Shortcodes: buttons elsewhere, for login, registration or both.
  • Profile photo: the image from the connected network can show on the site.
  • Account: each user connects or disconnects their networks from their account page.

Which fields fill in by themselves

On activation it creates the Social Registration form, editable like any other Ultimate Member form. The builder gains an option, "Sync Field", which links a field to a piece of network data; email is the obvious example. Whatever does not arrive that way is requested from the person on the two-step path.

Networks do not deliver the same things: Instagram does not pass the email address. For one-step registration there are options for when the email is missing or already in use, such as linking the accounts and logging in, or creating the account with a generated address. It is worth deciding this before opening: a generated address is no use for writing to that person.

The role is under control too. Default buttons assign the default registration role, and a shortcode lets you choose another, useful for separating member types by the page they arrive through.

Four limits of social login

It does not work alone. It is an Ultimate Member extension.

It publishes nothing. The site cannot post to the user's network after registration or login.

It does not bring rich network data. Only basic information is imported, because of each network's policies and to avoid app reviews.

It does not spare you the paperwork with each network. Each one requires creating an app on its own site; without those keys, its buttons do not work. Enabling seven networks means creating seven apps.

From installation to the first working button

Each provider's secrets are stored as constants in wp-config.php, and for fully cached sites there is a REST API callback endpoint.

It requires WordPress with Ultimate Member 2.13.0 or later. The path:

  1. Open Ultimate Member, Settings, Extensions, Social Login.
  2. Enable only the networks your audience will use.
  3. Create the app on each network and copy its ID and secret key.
  4. Review the Social Registration form and link the fields with "Sync Field".
  5. Test with the two-step path, which shows fields and warnings on screen, and turn on debug logging if something fails.
  6. Move to one step only if your profiles can live without those fields.

For other user bases

If your site is not built on Ultimate Member, Nextend Social Login lets people register and log in with networks from the standard WordPress form, and its Pro version adds Ultimate Member compatibility.

The base plugin and its extensions are explained in the Ultimate Member extensions pack.

Forms, emails and posts to networks

Can someone be registered without seeing any form?

Yes, with one-step registration. To sync fields there, the "Use this form in the overlay" option must be set to "Yes".

What happens if the network does not provide the email?

One-step registration offers options such as linking accounts and logging in, or creating the account with a generated email.

Can it post to my members' networks?

No. The extension does not allow posting to the user's network.
