About WooCommerce Amazon S3 Storage
Selling a video course, a photo pack or a software bundle, and then watching your server choke when someone downloads 2 GB, is a problem almost nobody anticipates when setting up a store. WooCommerce's built-in download methods work while files are small. As they grow, you get timeouts.
Your hosting wasn't built to serve heavy files
WooCommerce's Force Download method reads the file through PHP and streams it to the customer. Above roughly 500 MB it tends to hit the memory limit, the maximum execution time or the hosting's bandwidth throttling. The Redirect method avoids that, but exposes a URL the buyer can share. WooCommerce Amazon S3 Storage moves file delivery to Amazon S3 or Cloudflare R2, and the customer's browser downloads straight from the cloud.
Walkthrough: from uploading the file to the customer downloading it
- Step 1, connect the storage. In WooCommerce's integrations settings you choose Amazon S3 (region, credentials and bucket) or Cloudflare R2 (account ID, key and secret). Credentials are stored encrypted, or you can define them as WordPress constants. You need an existing AWS account or a Cloudflare account with R2 enabled: the plugin doesn't include storage.
- Step 2, add the downloadable file. You upload it to the product as usual. The plugin sends it to the bucket in the background through Action Scheduler, WooCommerce's job runner, so the admin doesn't freeze. You see each file's status in the product editor and can re-run failed ones from the Scheduled Actions screen.
- Step 3, the download. When the customer clicks the link, a signed URL is generated with an expiry you set in minutes. If they share it, it stops working after that time. And there are no direct links on the product page for a bot to scrape.
- Step 4, what doesn't change. The customer still sees the same downloads page in My Account, the same emails and the same WooCommerce limits and expiry. You can mix cloud files and local files in the same product.
One limit to keep in mind: files you uploaded before installing the plugin aren't blindly moved on their own; the upload is triggered when you add a new file or import a batch.
Questions buyers ask before installing
Do I need an Amazon Web Services account?
Only if you want to use Amazon S3. With Cloudflare R2 (no egress fees) a Cloudflare account with R2 enabled is enough.
Does it work with Wasabi, Backblaze B2 or DigitalOcean Spaces?
Yes, but with experimental support. You choose the user-defined provider option and add a small code snippet pointing to the endpoint. Amazon S3 and Cloudflare R2 are the two with native settings.
What's the maximum file size?
The plugin imposes no practical ceiling. Amazon S3 supports objects up to 5 TB and Cloudflare R2 up to 4.995 TB, and your hosting's PHP limits stop mattering.
Does it work with variable products or subscriptions?
Yes: it works with simple, variable, grouped and subscription products with downloadable files, and it is compatible with HPOS.
Paid member content without loading your server
If you sell access to restricted content (course videos, sound packs, members-only PDFs), the plugin handles delivery, not access control. For that you need Constellation separately, or the combination of WooCommerce Subscriptions with WooCommerce Memberships. With either, members download from the cloud through signed URLs.
The [amazon_s3] shortcode for files outside a product
Not every download lives on a product page. With the shortcode you can place a secure link in a post, a page, an email or a block template. It generates the signed URL when rendered, lets you change the bucket and region per use, and can return either the URL or the file's original name. A generator inside the product editor builds the shortcode without formatting mistakes.
Who WooCommerce Amazon S3 Storage makes sense for
For course creators, software developers, musicians, photographers and membership sites selling large files. If your downloads are light PDFs and traffic is low, WooCommerce's standard method probably does the job and this plugin would only add a cloud account to manage.
