About WooCommerce API Manager
Selling software is easy; controlling it after payment is the hard part
Anyone who sells a plugin, a theme or an app online runs into a problem that only shows up in the first week: the file is already in the customer's hands, and they can share it, keep using it after what they paid for has expired, or stay on an old version full of bugs. Getting paid is only half of the business.
WooCommerce API Manager turns the products in your store into API resources that are accessed with a key. That resource can be software, an online service, an iPhone or Android app, or anything reachable over the internet. Your software asks the store whether the key is active and, if it isn't, it doesn't work.
Three key types depending on how your customer buys
Choosing the right key model saves you calls from customers who don't know which one to use:
- Master key: a single key activates everything the customer has bought. You can cut off their access to all resources from it.
- Product order key: activates a single resource from a specific order. It works if the customer wants to give an employee or a friend access to just that.
- Associated key: similar to the previous one, but you control which products and orders it is tied to. It can be generated with another plugin or site and imported.
Each key has a defined or unlimited number of activations, and the client software can activate, deactivate and check the status of an activation.
Deliver new versions of your plugins and themes from your own store
When you publish a version, customers with a valid key can receive it, including through automatic or one-click updates. Files can be served from the store's server, from Amazon S3 or from a remote URL, and downloads use secure, expiring links so that only buyers get access. With S3 you avoid server configuration problems, firewalls or changes in WooCommerce downloads.
If you sell WordPress plugins or themes, there is a PHP library you can add to your product to handle key checks and updates. For any other language you will need to program an API client following the documentation.
Automatic renewal charges need Woo Subscriptions
WooCommerce API Manager manages keys and access, but it is not a payment gateway and it does not charge renewals on its own. Here is how the work is split:
- Already solved: keys, activations and deactivations, status checks and delivery of updates.
- Already solved: manual renewal emails 30 days before, 7 days before and 1 day after expiry, with a renewal link.
- Already solved: letting the customer upgrade or downgrade their key, with the option of proration.
- Already solved: importing data from Software Add-on for WooCommerce and answering its API queries.
- You cover it with another plugin: automatic renewal charging, which requires Woo Subscriptions and a compatible gateway.
- You cover it by hand or with a professional: the client-side code, that is, integrating the library or programming the API client.
- You cover it by hand: the software you sell and the hosting of its files if you choose S3 or a remote server.
Frequently asked questions
Is it only for WordPress plugins and themes?
No. It integrates with any programming language, and what you sell can be software, an app or an online service. For WordPress there is a PHP library that simplifies the integration.
Can I use it in a store that already has orders?
Yes. You tick the API box on the products you want, fill in the API tab, and the resources are created from the existing order line items that contain those products.
Can I sell subscriptions without Woo Subscriptions?
You can set expiry limits on access and ask for manual renewal, with the reminder emails. What it does not do without Woo Subscriptions and a compatible gateway is charge the renewal automatically.
Does it replace Software Add-on for WooCommerce?
Yes. It includes a tool to import its data and answers its API queries, so you can remove that extension once the import is finished. Your customers migrate to the new client software at their own pace.
