About WooCommerce Australia Post Shipping Method

Charging shipping by guesswork is the most expensive way to lose money

If you sell from Australia, postage often ends up as a flat rate that is too high for the customer next door and too low for the one in Perth, or as a manual table nobody updates. The result is always the same: you either lose margin on every heavy parcel or lose orders because the shipping cost scares people off at checkout.

WooCommerce Australia Post Shipping Method connects your store to the Australia Post shipping API and calculates the rate from the destination, weight and dimensions of what is in the cart. That way the customer sees the postage that matches their purchase, for both domestic and international parcels.

Which Australia Post services you can check

The plugin checks availability and cost for these services:

  • Domestic, Regular / Parcel Post: small, large and 500 g, 1 kg, 3 kg and 5 kg satchels.
  • Domestic, Express Post: small, large and 500 g satchel.
  • Domestic, Courier Post: small, medium and large.
  • International: Express Post International, Express Courier International Platinum, Express Courier International, Registered Post International, Pack and Track International, Air Mail and Sea Mail.

You do not have to offer everything. You can enable or disable each service, rename it for your customers and add your own cost to it, for example to cover packaging. You can also enable additional services such as extra coverage and delivery confirmation.

How to adjust it to the way you sell

You sell single, light products

Packing each item individually quotes every product separately and adds up the results. It is simple, but with several items in an order the total can drift from what you will actually pay for a single parcel.

Your orders usually contain several items

The built-in box packer distributes products into boxes you define with their dimensions and weights. It is the option closest to a real parcel and reduces surprises when you prepare the shipment. It does require you to measure and record your boxes properly.

You want a checkout without doubts for the customer

You can show all available rates so the buyer chooses between speed and price, or return only the cheapest one to simplify the decision. For quick-purchase catalogues, the second option removes friction; if your customers value urgency, the first gives them freedom.

You sell inside and outside Australia

Since the method is added to a WooCommerce shipping zone, you can have it in the domestic zone and in international ones, and use its availability settings to limit which countries get rates.

What your products must have loaded correctly

The calculation depends entirely on your catalogue data. Physical products need correct weight and dimensions; a missing or wrong weight gives a wrong rate that either gives shipping away or scares the customer off. Review your catalogue before opening the store, especially if you have many products.

The connection works with your own Australia Post API key or, if you leave the field blank, with the built-in key. The server also needs fsockopen or cURL support.

It needs Australian dollars and a store based in Australia

This plugin is not for every store. It requires the currency to be the Australian dollar and the base location to be Australia. It works with centimetres and kilograms, although other units are converted automatically. If you sell in another currency or ship from another country, look for a different option.

It also does not calculate discounted or negotiated rates from an Australia Post Business account, nor does it support Prepaid Parcel Post satchels with their bulk discounts. If your business relies on those rates, what you charge at checkout may not match what you actually pay.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an Australia Post account to get started?

No. You can leave the API key blank to use the built-in one, or enter your own key obtained from Australia Post.

Why does it not show up at checkout?

The method must be added to a WooCommerce shipping zone that covers the customer's region. Also check that products have weight and dimensions.

Does it work for international shipping?

Yes, it returns rates for international destinations from an Australian store, as long as the currency is the Australian dollar.

Is it compatible with the cart and checkout block editor?

Yes, it is compatible with the cart and checkout blocks, and with high-performance order storage (HPOS).
