About WooCommerce Elavon Converge Payment Gateway
Taking card payments without sending the customer to another site
When a card payment fails and the store only answers «an error occurred», the customer doesn't email you to ask: they leave. And often the cause was easy to fix, like a mistyped detail. WooCommerce Elavon Converge Payment Gateway connects your store to Elavon, a widely used merchant acquirer in North America, and makes the payment happen inside your own checkout.
It accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, UnionPay and JCB. The payment form includes inline validation and sharp icons, and you can show detailed decline messages instead of the generic error. Because the customer never leaves your site, you control what the purchase process looks like and can test variations to see which converts best.
That control has a trade-off: since the payment is direct, your store needs an SSL certificate.
Refunds, voids and captures from the order screen
Anyone who runs a store knows how annoying it is to log into the processor's dashboard just to return an amount. With this plugin, from «Edit Order» you can create a full or partial refund and send it to Elavon with the «Refund via Credit Card» button. If the transaction hasn't been captured or settled yet, the plugin performs an automatic void instead.
If you prefer to authorize the charge and collect it later (for example, when the order is ready to ship), you can capture the authorization from the same screen with the «Capture Charge» action. It's optional: you don't need to touch it if you charge at the time of purchase.
Saved cards, eCheck and recurring charges
Customers can save several cards to their account, with no limit, and see them in a unified «My Payments» section. They can also add, change or remove payment methods from My Account without going through checkout. Card data is stored on Elavon's servers, which significantly reduces your PCI responsibility, although it doesn't remove it.
If you sell with WooCommerce Subscriptions, the gateway supports its features, including payment date and subscription date changes. With WooCommerce Pre-Orders you can take payment details upfront and charge automatically when the product is released.
eCheck payment lets customers pay from a checking or savings account, and the plugin displays the required authorization messages. It also supports charging in a currency different from your account currency, using Elavon's multi-currency feature.
It only works in the United States and Canada
Elavon Converge is only available in those two countries. It used to be called Elavon VM (Virtual Merchant), in case your account appears under that name. Here is what the plugin solves and what is left on your side:
- Already solved: card and eCheck payments at checkout, detailed decline messages, refunds, voids, captures, saved cards and charging in another currency.
- With another plugin: subscriptions and pre-orders require WooCommerce Subscriptions and WooCommerce Pre-Orders; this gateway is only compatible with them. If you want customers to choose their currency, you need a switcher such as Aelia Currency Switcher, which is purchased separately.
- With Elavon: having the account open, getting the credentials and PIN, and asking them to enable eCheck if you want to use it.
- On your own: installing the SSL certificate on your hosting and reviewing your checkout.
Frequently asked questions about WooCommerce Elavon Converge
Can I use it if I sell from Spain or Latin America?
No. Elavon Converge is only available in the United States and Canada, so you need a business with an account in one of those countries.
Do I need an Elavon account?
Yes. From the Elavon dashboard you get the account credentials and the PIN, and you save them in the plugin settings.
Does it work with subscriptions?
Yes, as long as you have WooCommerce Subscriptions installed. The same goes for pre-orders with WooCommerce Pre-Orders.
Can I charge by electronic check?
Yes, but eCheck must be enabled on your Elavon account. The plugin takes care of displaying the authorization messages.
Is card data stored on my server?
Saved payment methods are stored on Elavon's servers. Even so, since the payment is made directly on your site, SSL is mandatory.
