About WooCommerce FedEx Shipping Method

For the US or Canadian store that already ships with FedEx

Charging shipping by guesswork ends badly in two ways: you lose money when the parcel costs more than you charged, or you lose the sale when the customer sees an inflated price. WooCommerce FedEx Shipping Method solves that for a very specific profile: stores based in the United States or Canada, working in US or Canadian dollars, that already have a FedEx account.

If your store is outside those two countries, or uses another currency, this is not your plugin: both conditions are mandatory. It also won't help if you mostly ship with other carriers, because it is tied to FedEx. And if you want to print discounted labels from your dashboard, its job is different: it calculates rates at checkout. Labels are bought from FedEx or with a separate plugin.

The underlying problem: real weight is not what you think

In physical goods retail, shipping cost rarely matches intuition: it depends on weight, box dimensions, destination and whether delivery is residential or commercial. That is why this plugin requires every product to have weight and dimensions. Without that data, the rate your customer receives will be unreliable. It works in inches and pounds, and can convert automatically from other units.

Rates from your FedEx account, calculated in the cart and checkout

The plugin connects to your account through the FedEx API and shows the buyer the price based on your rates. It updates according to the address, cart weight and package dimensions. You can offer every option so the customer chooses, or return a single rate.

  • Domestic and international services: from Ground and Home Delivery to Priority Overnight, Express Saver or International Priority, among others.
  • Checkout control: you enable only the services you want to offer, rename them so customers understand them, and decide the order they appear in.
  • Your own surcharges: you can add a flat amount or a percentage to the FedEx rate, differently for each service, useful for covering packaging or handling.

Packing: how your products become boxes

There are two methods. With per-item calculation, each unit in the cart is sent to FedEx and the quotes are added up. With box packing, you define your boxes by height, width, length, weight and maximum weight, and the plugin distributes the products among them. This second method is mainly volume-based and is the recommended one when orders mix several items, because it gives more realistic quotes.

Heavy and palletized cargo

It includes settings for FedEx Freight (LTL), designed for goods over 150 pounds, usually on pallets. These options appear when the order exceeds that weight, and the rates are shown at checkout because they need the recipient's city. You can add liftgate service as a surcharge.

Residential or commercial, without intervening

If you enable Home Delivery and Ground, the plugin picks one or the other based on the address type. If your FedEx account has address validation, the residential flag can be set automatically. It also supports FedEx One Rate and FedEx Ground Economy (formerly SmartPost), the latter if it is enabled on your account.

Requirements to sort out before buying

You need a FedEx account with API credentials. If you are going to use the old SOAP API, the server must have SOAP installed. After that you add FedEx to a shipping zone and the rest is configured in the service and packing settings. It is compatible with the cart and checkout blocks and with high-performance order storage (HPOS).

Frequently asked questions

Does it work for shipping outside the US and Canada?

Yes, for international shipments, but the store must be based in one of those two countries.

Does it print labels?

It is not its main function. You buy them from FedEx or with a separate label plugin.

Can I add a markup to the rate?

Yes, a flat amount or a percentage, per service.

What happens if my products have no weight or dimensions?

Rates won't be accurate: the API and the packer use them to calculate. Fill them in before activating the plugin.
