About WooCommerce Flat Rate Box Shipping

Charging shipping by the box, not by an average that loses money

Anyone selling physical goods tends to look at the item price and forget that the carrier charges for the package. WooCommerce Flat Rate Box Shipping starts from there: it packs the items into the boxes you define and applies to each box the fixed cost for its destination.

How Flat Rate Box Shipping calculates an order, from product page to checkout

Picture a cosmetics store that ships domestically and abroad. This would be the walkthrough.

First: measurements and weight on every product

Every product needs dimensions and weight in WooCommerce. Without that data the plugin can't pack properly, and the rates customers see will be off. It's the step most often skipped and the one that shapes the result the most.

Second: a shipping zone and its boxes

Add the method to a shipping zone and define your boxes: length, width, height and maximum weight. Each zone can have its own boxes and rates, so domestic and international shipping can be charged differently. You can add several box sizes per zone and even several sets of sizes.

Third: three costs you can combine

  • A flat cost per box.
  • A cost per weight unit, multiplied by the weight of the box.
  • A percentage of the value of the items packed inside.

For example, a fixed amount plus a small percentage of the order value. The method also supports a handling fee, either fixed or as a percentage.

Fourth: the item that fits in no box

You can set a cost for items that can't be packed. If you leave that field empty, the shipping method is hidden when something doesn't fit, so make sure that doesn't leave a customer with no shipping option at all.

Fifth: what happens at checkout

The plugin checks the destination, matches it to its zone, packs the items into the most suitable box and shows the rate. Packing is mainly volume-based and also takes item sizes into account. Even so, it will never be identical to a person arranging things in a box, and small anomalies can appear.

Questions before you set up your boxes

Does it print shipping labels?

No. It calculates the rates the customer sees at checkout. For labels you need another tool, such as WooCommerce Shipping, and the two can be used together.

Can I have several boxes in the same zone?

Yes, as many as you need. You define them once and on every order the plugin automatically picks the one that best fits the cart.

Does it help me avoid under or overcharging?

It can help, because the price follows your real boxes, the weight and the value of what they carry. It depends on you configuring boxes and costs well: the plugin can't guess your carrier expenses.

Can I add a handling fee?

Yes, as a fixed amount or as a percentage, on the shipping method.

When Table Rate Shipping fits better than Flat Rate Box Shipping

Flat Rate Box Shipping fits if you ship in a defined set of boxes and want the price to follow your packaging. It isn't the right tool if your rules depend on the cart total, the number of items or the shipping class: that is what Table Rate Shipping is for, with rules by location, price, weight, class or quantity. It also won't suit you if you don't ship in standardized boxes or won't enter your product measurements.
