About WooCommerce Memberships
Membership and subscription are not the same thing
This confusion wastes more time than anything else when building a members area, so it comes first. Membership is access: who can see what. Subscription is billing: who pays how much and how often. Two different things, and they do not always go together.
A lifetime membership paid once needs only this. A monthly membership that renews itself also needs WooCommerce Subscriptions, which is a separate product. Knowing that beforehand saves discovering it halfway through the build.
How access is granted
- By selling the membership as a product, the most direct case.
- With the purchase of another product: whoever buys the course automatically enters the student area.
- From several products at once, so anything in a range grants access to the same place.
- By hand, for invite-only areas or members who sign up by another route.
Plans are created separately from products, and that is what makes these combinations possible without duplicating anything.
What can be done with the content
Restricting posts, pages, categories, products and downloadable files. And releasing it on a drip, which is the most useful feature of all: instead of handing over everything on day one, it opens up according to how long the member has been in. A three-month course is then consumed over three months, rather than downloaded whole in an afternoon and cancelled.
There are also member discounts, applicable across the shop, to specific products or to categories, and free shipping for members only. In a shop, that is the simplest way to justify a fee: the member pays less and buys more often.
What to decide before restricting
If your content is already indexed in Google and receiving visits, restricting it takes it out of the results. Before closing anything, worth looking at which pages bring traffic and deciding deliberately which stay open.
What usually works better is keeping public what attracts (the articles, the guides, the part people search for) and reserving for members what solves (the templates, the videos, the community, the support). Closing everything protects content nobody can find any more.
