About WooCommerce Recommendation Engine
When the customer looks at one product and leaves
Many stores lose sales over something simple: the visitor views a product, isn't fully convinced and leaves without discovering a better one three categories away. Filling in "you may also like" blocks by hand works with twenty products and stops working with hundreds. WooCommerce Recommendation Engine tries to solve this with data from your own store: it records what is viewed and what is bought, and uses that to suggest products.
A real walkthrough: from the product page to a fuller cart
Imagine a store selling cameras and accessories. This is how the plugin would work step by step:
- Step 1, someone views a camera. Every visit to a product is stored in the plugin's database. Over time, the related-by-views module shows what other visitors also viewed, useful for revealing items the customer wouldn't have found by browsing.
- Step 2, that person buys. The purchase history module shows what the same users have bought, even if not at the same time.
- Step 3, the next customer reaches the same camera. The bought-together module shows what usually goes in the same order, such as accessories and add-ons the buyer hadn't thought of.
Recommendations are placed with two widgets: Recommended Products (for views and purchase history) and Purchased Products (for items bought together).
The data takes time to arrive, and that is the first limit
A review from a user with about a thousand visits a day says customers didn't return often enough for the recommendations to sharpen. It isn't a guarantee that the same will happen to you, but it is worth knowing before you buy.
Large catalogs: this is where the complaints are
Several users describe slowness when generating recommendations with a large catalog. One review mentions around 3,000 products and more than an hour per run via WP-CLI. Another mentions having to rebuild the database from time to time for data to appear. If your store has thousands of items and heavy traffic, test carefully in a staging environment before going live.
