About WooCommerce Store Credit
A credit you hand out is a discount you decide today and is spent tomorrow
You want to give a customer value back without refunding money, or sell a balance someone else can give as a gift, and the first question is what it can be spent on.
Store credit is a coupon with a balance, so its spending rules (shipping, taxes, products and combination with other coupons) are decisions about your margin that you make before issuing it. The balance is the same, but what leaves your store in exchange is not: limited to a category it is spent on those products, and with shipping allowed part of it goes on delivery.
Store Credit, by WooCommerce, offers store credit coupons that are redeemed at checkout. The customer can make several purchases until the credit runs out or the coupon expires.
What it lets you do with credit
- Refund or compensation: credit can be used as a refund card or as a goodwill gesture.
- Delivery by email: it sends the customer an exclusive store credit coupon.
- Selling credit: customers can buy credit to use or to give as a gift.
- Uses: one coupon serves several purchases, or its use is limited.
- Products and categories: credit can be limited to specific products or categories.
- Shipping: you decide whether credit applies to shipping costs.
- Taxes: the coupon applies before or after taxes are included, depending on local rules.
- Other coupons: the customer can use the credit separately or together with other coupons.
- The whole order: the discount is reflected across all order elements: items, taxes and shipping.
Balance visible to the customer and customizable emails
The available balance shows in the cart, at checkout and on the Store credit page in My Account. It works with WooCommerce's Cart and Checkout blocks.
The emails and the coupon code format are customizable. It also integrates with external tools such as ERPs.
A test before issuing credit to customers
Before sending real credits, place a test order with a credit and review how the discount is split. One combination worth checking is a credit limited to one category, with an order that mixes that category with another, includes shipping and has another coupon applied at the same time. It is a test of your own, not a procedure of the plugin.
The result depends on your shipping, tax and coupon-combination settings. Write down the behavior you want before configuring the credit and compare it with what the order shows.
Installation and first credit
- Install the plugin with the WordPress installer and activate it; it needs WooCommerce.
- Review the shipping, tax and coupon-combination settings.
- Create a credit coupon and define its uses, expiry and allowed products or categories.
- Send it by email to a test customer, or put it on sale as credit.
- Place a test order and check the balance in the cart, at checkout and in My Account.
