About WooCommerce USPS Shipping Method

When the customer sees an $8 shipping charge and you pay $14

With a flat shipping rate you almost always lose somewhere: either you overcharge small parcels and scare off sales, or you subsidize heavy ones and absorb the difference. WooCommerce USPS Shipping Method queries the USPS API during checkout and shows the customer what it really costs to ship that cart to that address.

The calculation is based on the products in the cart and the destination, so the price is close to what USPS will charge you later. Buyers know the cost before they pay and you stop guessing at shipping margins.

Which USPS services WooCommerce USPS Shipping Method can show

It covers domestic and international shipping:

  • Domestic: First Class, Flat Rate, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, Standard Post, Media Mail and Library Mail.
  • International: First Class Mail International letters and envelopes, Global Express Guaranteed (GXG), Priority Mail International and Priority Mail International Flat Rate.

You can enable or disable each service, rename it so it reads clearly at checkout, and add or subtract a fixed amount or a percentage. You also choose whether the customer sees only the cheapest rate or all the options returned.

Three stores, three ways to use it

If you sell parcels of very different sizes

The plugin packs the items before requesting the rate. You can pack each item separately or use the built-in packer, which works by volume and fits products into USPS Flat Rate boxes and any custom boxes you define. If you enable the Flat Rate option, the customer gets a flat rate price, and you can add a per-box fee to cover packing.

If you sell books, discs or printed material

Media Mail and Library Mail are among the domestic services. You can show them with a clear name and adjust their price if you want to absorb part of it.

If you already print discounted labels

In the API settings you can choose retail rates (the standard ones) or commercial rates (discounted). With commercial rates, the checkout price gets closer to the labels you print with WooCommerce Shipping, the free service that unlocks those rates.

Combining it with free shipping and flat rate

It works within WooCommerce shipping zones, so it can coexist with free shipping and flat rate in the same zone. For example, you can offer live USPS options and free shipping over a certain amount. You decide which methods each region sees.

If USPS returns no rate, you can set a fallback price so the customer can still complete the order, or choose not to show a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a USPS account?

Yes. The plugin connects to the API with your own USPS account credentials. It is set up from the settings, with no code to write.

Why are my products not returning a rate?

Usually the weight and dimensions are missing on non-virtual products. Also check that the currency is US dollars, that the shipping zone matches the customer address and that the origin postcode is entered. Debug mode logs the USPS response and tells you why there is no rate.

Can I print labels with it?

No. It only shows rates at checkout. To print discounted USPS labels, pair it with WooCommerce Shipping.

Does it work if I ship with UPS or other carriers?

If you mostly ship with other carriers, this plugin is not the right one: it is built for USPS.

Only for stores in dollars and based in US territory

The store must use US dollars and have the United States, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands as its base country. It works with inches and pounds, although it converts other units automatically. Also, the volume-based packer gives good results in most cases, but it will never be as precise as a person packing the box, so expect the occasional small difference.
