About wpForo Advanced Reactions
A «like» can't tell applause from irony
A forum lives on participation, and a good share of visitors read without ever writing. For them, voting is the only cheap way to say something, and a single button falls short: the same thumb is used to say thanks, to agree or to laugh. wpForo Advanced Reactions expands post voting with several reactions, in the style of social networks.
Every reaction you add is also a moderation decision: it can add or remove reputation points, and that changes how people behave.
Custom icons and points per reaction in wpForo Advanced Reactions
- Variety of icons: standard emojis, icon packs and emoticons, or your own images and SVGs so the reactions fit your community's tone.
- Unlimited quantity: you can create as many reactions as you want. More is not always better: the more options, the harder it is for someone to know which one to pick.
- Configurable points: each reaction can add or remove a specific number of points from a user's reputation, based on their interactions. It helps reward useful participation or discourage negative behavior.
- Who reacted with what: you can see which users chose each icon, which helps you understand what kind of messages trigger what kind of response.
The like and dislike votes you already had are not affected: the addon only expands the voting options.
How each type of forum can use it
Small, close-knit community
Here reactions make the conversation visible. Three or four well-chosen icons are enough. If you enable negative points, first consider whether a small group of people who know each other needs to see someone's reputation drop.
Large forum with moderators
Points per reaction let you turn reputation into a tool: positive reactions push those who contribute and negative ones discourage what you don't want to see. Define carefully which reaction subtracts and by how much, because a poorly calibrated system can be manipulated or cause complaints.
Forum with its own identity
If your community has its own jargon or a very specific topic, uploading your own SVG icons or images makes the reactions sound like your community and not like a generic social network.
What people usually ask before changing the «like»
Does it replace the votes I already have? No. Existing votes stay and the addon expands the possibilities.
Can I use my own icons? Yes, both images and SVGs, as well as emojis, icon packs and emoticons.
Is there a limit on reactions? No, you can create an unlimited number.
Do I need to configure anything for them to show? Once activated, it is configured from the wpForo settings. If they don't appear, review that configuration and test on a clean installation before blaming the theme.
No reactions in the Q&A layout, and wpForo only
It is a wpForo addon: without that plugin it does nothing. In addition, the reaction buttons work in all forum layouts except the Q&A layout, which keeps its own up and down votes. If your forum is of that type, this addon won't give you what you are looking for.
