You upload a video to YouTube or Vimeo, paste it into a post and then wait for visits that never come. The problem is not the video: as it sits embedded, Google sees a player and little else.
Yoast Video SEO Premium takes care of that translation. It detects the videos on your site and gives Google the data it needs, without you touching any code. Even so, you supply the raw material: the plugin starts from the title and description you write, so a badly titled video will still go unnoticed even if the markup is flawless.

Everything happens in the background, with no complicated panels. These are the pieces that change:
- Automatic VideoObject schema: it is added to every video the plugin detects, so Google can find it, understand it and, if it decides to, show it in rich results with a thumbnail.
- XML video sitemap: it is created and updated on its own, so Google finds and indexes your videos without manual work.
- OpenGraph tags: the video preview looks right when someone shares it on Facebook, Slack or other platforms.
- Several hosting platforms: it works with YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, VideoPress and others.
Your own thumbnail, light loading and video that adapts
The thumbnail is the first thing people see before deciding whether to click. The plugin lets you set a custom thumbnail and preview it before publishing, which is very handy when the automatic frame comes out with an odd expression or a black background.

Do I have to write the video schema by hand?
No. The plugin adds VideoObject automatically to every video it detects. What you do need to provide is a good title and a good description.
Do video sitemaps slow down my site?
That is not what to expect: the plugin delivers video with asynchronous JavaScript so pages keep loading quickly.
Does it work with private videos?
Not at the moment. If a video is set to private before it is indexed, the plugin may not recognize it. If you want a video to bring you traffic, it has to be accessible.
