About AdSanity - Weighted Ads

When the big advertiser and the small one appear equally often

You have a random ad group and several advertisers with different deals. The one who contributes the most expects more exposure, but normal rotation splits appearances evenly. You end up tweaking things by hand or promising visibility that your site does not reflect.

AdSanity - Weighted Ads is an AdSanity add-on that adds a weight to each ad. That weight indicates how often you want it to appear when ads are shown at random, whether in a random group or in rotating ads. In direct advertising, where each advertiser negotiates their own terms, that difference is part of the deal: not every spot is worth the same, and your site should reflect it.

A split between three advertisers, step by step

Picture a sidebar with a random group and three ads: one from a main sponsor, one from a regular partner and one from a local shop that has just opened.

  • Create each ad as usual. When you create it, you can assign it a weight that indicates how often you want it to show in a random display.
  • Give the main sponsor the highest weight. That is the ad that should be seen most often within the group.
  • Lower the weight of the other two. Here is the catch: weights are relative. They count in comparison with the other ads in the same group, so you decide by looking at the whole set, not at each ad on its own.
  • Check the result on the page. If you leave every ad on "highest", they will appear with roughly similar frequency, and the setting will make no difference.

Two limits are worth keeping in mind. The weight only matters when the display is random (random groups or rotating ads), and it expresses a desired frequency, not an exact quota of impressions. If you have sold a guaranteed number of appearances, do not use it as a counter. It also needs AdSanity installed: it does not work on its own.

Frequently asked questions about AdSanity - Weighted Ads

Does it work without AdSanity?

No. It is an add-on and requires AdSanity. It is best to install only the add-ons you need for your advertising goals, not every one available.

Does it guarantee a number of impressions per ad?

No. The weight sets how often you want each ad to appear relative to the others in the group. It is a distribution preference, not a commitment to specific figures.

What happens if I set every ad to the highest weight?

They will appear with similar frequency to each other. For one ad to stand out, others must have a lower weight.

Is it useful if I only show one ad per spot?

Hardly. The weight only makes sense when several ads compete in a random display, because it is measured against the others.

If all your advertisers are worth the same, leave it out

If you charge everyone the same and want each one to have equal chances of appearing, you may not need to add anything.

The add-on is justified when there are real differences between advertisers: a main sponsor, a promotion of your own that you want to push or a new advertiser you give less prominence.
