About Advanced Ads – PopUp and Layer Ads
A heavy pop-up costs you visitors who never come back
Anyone who lives off advertising on their site knows the dilemma: the formats that get seen the most are also the ones that annoy the most. An ad that covers the screen as soon as someone arrives, and shows up again on the next page, turns a visit into a closed tab. The hard part of a layer is not showing it, but deciding when it appears and how many times the same reader sees it.
Advanced Ads – PopUp and Layer Ads is an Advanced Ads add-on that shows the ad in layers on top of the content and comes with the controls to pace it.
When it enters, how it appears and how it closes
- Time-based triggers: you can set delays before it shows and closing times, for example so an ad fades out on its own after a while.
- Interaction-based triggers: the layer can appear once the visitor has scrolled a set distance down the page, that is, when they have already read something.
- Frequency capping: you control how many times the same visitor sees the window within a given period.
- Position: there are several positions for the window, so you can test which one is seen best without getting in the way.
- Optional background overlay: it darkens the rest of the page so all attention goes to the layer.
- Entry effects: direct display, fade or slide.
- Customizable close button: readers can leave easily, something worth taking care of if you don't want them to close the whole tab.
Notices, subscriptions and any content that needs to be seen
The layer is not limited to ads. You can show an important notice, a subscription form or other content worth interrupting the reading for. If your site mixes advertising and subscriber capture, the same system of timing, scroll and frequency works for both.
Even so, a pop-up is still an interruption. It works better with a scroll trigger and low frequency than with an immediate appearance on every page.
Decide whether it fits your monetization before installing it
It is an add-on, not a standalone plugin: it needs Advanced Ads installed. It is not a pop-up builder with its own visual editor and it does not include design templates or built-in forms: what you show inside the layer is something you prepare yourself.
Can I show AdSense ads inside the pop-up?
No. Google AdSense policies do not allow ads in popups (they do allow fixed or sticky formats). You can use the add-on on a site with AdSense, but put other ads or your own content in the layer.
Can I stop the pop-up from showing to the same visitor over and over?
Yes, with the frequency capping options: you set how many times it is shown to the same user within a specific period.
Can the background be darkened?
Yes, the background overlay is optional, so you can turn it on or leave the layer without it.
Is it good for anything besides ads?
Yes: notices, subscription forms or any content you want to highlight in a layer.
