About MemberPress MailChimp

Your mailing list does not know who is still paying

Once a membership is a few months old, very different people sit on your list: active members, former members and people who never wanted promotional email. With no more data than that, Mailchimp sees them all as contacts in the same audience.

The result is awkward: you offer the annual plan to someone who already pays for it, or send access instructions to someone who has lost that access. Your emails can only be as precise as what your list knows about each member, and that data lives in MemberPress.

MemberPress MailChimp 3.0, by Caseproof, carries that status over to Mailchimp. It connects your site to one audience and uses merge tags to record who gave consent and where they stand with each membership.

The data that reaches Mailchimp

  • Signups into one audience: you choose which one is tied to your site members.
  • Global tag: it applies to all new members with a value of 1, or 0 if they did not check the opt-in box.
  • Per-membership tag: its value switches to active or inactive according to the subscription status.
  • Dynamic segments: with those values you can create auto-updating segments in Mailchimp.
  • Custom fields: they can be sent with a code snippet, as long as they are text type.

Segments that follow each member's status

The per-membership tag is optional, but without it there are no segments by level. It lets you separate those who are active at a level from those who no longer are, and aim each campaign at one of those groups.

With that data you can set up, for example, a segment of active members for new content notices and another of inactive ones for a win-back campaign. Create the segments in Mailchimp and check with a test account that the value changes as you expect.

The global tag deserves the same attention: a value of 0 means that person did not check the box when signing up. If you send promotional campaigns, keep that value in mind when defining who they go to.

One audience, merge tags and two sync moments

  • A single audience. The integration does not split members across audiences; it separates them through segments.
  • No Mailchimp tags. It works with merge tags and does not support the tags Mailchimp uses to organize contacts.
  • It syncs at two moments: when the user subscribes and if their subscription expires.
  • Profile changes are not sent on their own. If a member changes their data, you will have to update it by hand in Mailchimp or set up another solution.
  • Text fields only for custom data.

It does not design or send emails either. Campaigns and automations are created in Mailchimp. It needs MemberPress installed and a Mailchimp account.

Connecting to Mailchimp, step by step

  1. Install and activate the add-on alongside MemberPress.
  2. Go to MemberPress, then Settings, and open the Marketing tab.
  3. Paste the API key from your Mailchimp account. If it connects, you will see the message «Everything's Chimpy».
  4. Select the audience that corresponds to your site members.
  5. Choose the global tag.
  6. In Mailchimp, create a text field, not required and not visible, for each membership.
  7. Edit each membership and assign its tag in the Advanced tab.

Email integrations for MemberPress

All of this relies on MemberPress Pro, the plugin that handles access rules and payments. This add-on only gives it the connection to Mailchimp.

If you prefer to organize with tags and use ActiveCampaign, MemberPress ActiveCampaign (Tags Version) assigns tags according to the membership purchased. If your tool is Kit, the email service for creators formerly called ConvertKit, look at MemberPress ConvertKit.

Audiences, key errors and custom fields

Can I use a different audience for each membership?

No. The integration uses a single audience and separates memberships with merge tags.

What do I do if the key is correct and I get an error?

The message «Something went wrong. Double check your input» with a correct key generally means Mailchimp's API service (Akamai) is blocking your IP address as suspicious. You need to contact Mailchimp support.

Can I send the company name or another field of my own?

Yes, with a code snippet and a filter, if the field is text type. Dropdowns and multi-selects do not work.
