About Aelia Currency Switcher for WooCommerce
The fee your customer sees on their statement and you don't
Selling abroad with prices in a single currency often ends the same way: the visitor sees an amount they don't quite understand, does the exchange math in their head and remembers that their bank may charge a fee for paying in a currency other than the one on their card. You don't see that cost in your dashboard, but the buyer has it in mind right before pressing the pay button, and it can be the reason they don't press it.
Aelia Currency Switcher for WooCommerce lets each visitor choose the currency in which they see prices and complete the purchase. The amount they see in the shop is the amount they pay when the order is closed.
From first click to order: a visitor's journey with Aelia Currency Switcher
Picture someone arriving at your shop from another country. This is what happens at each step and what you need to have decided beforehand:
- They enter the shop. The plugin can detect their country through geolocation and activate the matching currency. You define the list of currencies you accept.
- They browse prices and switch currency if they want. The currencies appear in a widget as a list. When they pick one, the shop shows prices and charges in it. Their choice is remembered and activates by itself on every later visit.
- They reach checkout. The available payment methods are filtered according to the selected currency. Check beforehand that your gateway accepts every currency you enable, because the plugin doesn't change what your gateway can charge.
- The order is completed. Every order stores the currency it was placed in, so you and the customer can both check how much was actually paid.
Questions before building a multi-currency catalog
Do I have to use an exchange rate?
No. You can type the price of each product and coupon directly in each currency, without using any exchange rate.
Do exchange rates update on their own?
Yes, through Open Exchange Rates, OFX or the Turkish Central Bank. If you prefer to control them yourself, you can also set them manually.
Does it remember the visitor's currency?
Yes. The preferred currency persists and activates automatically on every visit.
Does it work on its own?
No: it needs WooCommerce and the free Aelia framework, which the plugin itself can install automatically.
Three ways to set a price in each currency
This is the core decision. You can let the plugin convert using an automatic or manual exchange rate, or type fixed prices per currency on products and coupons. You can also assign a base currency to each product and let the rest be calculated from it. Setting prices per country is what lets an expensive market and a cheap one avoid depending only on the day's exchange rate.
The work that is still yours: per-currency prices in large catalogs
If you have many products and several currencies with their own price, you will have to maintain those amounts. Other bulk-edit plugins may not know about the per-currency prices this plugin adds, so check compatibility before using them on a large catalog. And remember that the plugin changes how prices are displayed and charged, not which gateways accept each currency or how you report your sales.
