About AffiliateWP PayPal Payouts

Owing commissions is not the same as having the balance to pay them

Your affiliates sold well and the month's total is calculated. You review the list, confirm the payment and PayPal rejects it. Your business has money, but it is in the bank, and here that does not help: payouts come from the balance you already hold in PayPal, and money from a linked bank or card does not count.

An affiliate program creates a payment obligation before it creates the task of paying. So the useful question at each close is how much balance you need in PayPal and when it must be there, not only how much the list adds up to.

PayPal Payouts sends commissions from WordPress, without you having to go into PayPal for each transfer. It requires AffiliateWP, which records the referrals and calculates what you owe.

Three ways to send the money

  • Individual: you click Pay on an unpaid referral.
  • Multiple selection: you check several referrals and choose Pay from the bulk actions. Each referral is paid separately.
  • Pay Affiliates: you set a date range and a minimum earnings amount, choose PayPal, review the preview and submit. Each affiliate receives one combined payment, and their referrals move to Paid.

The third groups each person's amounts and shows you the total before confirming. If one payout in the batch fails, you handle it separately and the rest stays paid.

With a holding period set, recent commissions wait until your refund window has passed. If an order is refunded in that time, its referral is rejected before it is paid.

Your PayPal account has to be ready

Two conditions depend on PayPal, not on the plugin:

  • Approval: Payouts is not enabled by default on Business accounts. New accounts or those with little history need approval from PayPal merchant support.
  • Balance: it must cover the total before sending.

Allow for approval before announcing your first payment date. The connection uses the Client ID and Secret of a PayPal app. The old method, MassPay, is no longer available for new accounts.

What each affiliate needs

The affiliate enters their payment email in the Settings tab of their area, in the How you'll be paid section. They need a PayPal account tied to that email. If they do not have one, PayPal sends them an invitation, and if it is not accepted within 30 days, the money returns to your account.

When PayPal cannot send to their country or currency, one way out is Stripe, also inside AffiliateWP. You can set one method for the whole program, change it per affiliate in Edit Affiliate or let each one choose if at least two are enabled.

Connecting the app and testing in Sandbox

  1. In AffiliateWP » Settings » Payouts, turn on PayPal and click Configure.
  2. Log in to the PayPal Developer Dashboard with your usual PayPal details.
  3. Choose Sandbox or Live and, in Apps & Credentials, click Create App. Leave the type as Merchant.
  4. Confirm that Payouts is checked under Features and copy the Client ID and Secret.
  5. Paste them into AffiliateWP, click Test Live Connection or, with Sandbox Mode, Test Sandbox Connection, and save.
  6. Make a test payout. The Sandbox and live balances are separate.

No code changes are needed.

Programs that also pay through PayPal

The base is AffiliateWP. If you sell subscriptions, Recurring Referrals records commissions on each subscription payment, and your PayPal balance will have to cover them month after month.

If you have not chosen a plugin yet, Easy Affiliate offers one-click PayPal payouts with suspicious activity alerts, and SliceWP makes bulk PayPal payouts from the admin.

When PayPal returns an error or the payout has already gone

Does AffiliateWP keep part of each payout?

No. It adds no fee to payouts. You pay only PayPal's standard fees.

What does error 422 mean?

Insufficient PayPal balance, or a currency or country that cannot receive the payment.

And 403?

The account is not approved for API payouts, or the live credentials are wrong.

PayPal returns 429, what do I do?

PayPal is under heavy load. Wait 30 minutes and try again.

Can I undo a confirmed batch?

No. Once paid, AffiliateWP cannot reverse it, so review the preview carefully.

Where do I see what failed?

Turn on Enable Debug Mode in Settings » Advanced and open the log in Tools » Debug Assistant.
