About Directorist BuddyPress Integration
Your member lives on their profile and their listings live somewhere else
Someone signs up to your community, completes their profile and joins a group. One day they want to publish their business and find out that it happens in another area of the site, with a different login form and a different screen to manage it. What they publish does not show up on their profile or in the activity others see either.
A directory inside a community works when the listing is part of the publisher's profile, rather than sitting in a separate corner. Directorist BuddyPress Integration joins the two plugins so they work as a single application: listings enter BuddyPress profiles, groups, activity and messages.
It does not create the community or the directory: it needs Directorist and BuddyPress running.
Publishing and viewing listings from the BuddyPress profile
Each profile gains a listings tab, with what that member has published and what they have saved as a favorite.
- Add a listing from the profile: this sub-tab only appears on your own profile, and the link is also under My Account in the WordPress toolbar.
- The usual form: its fields come from the Directorist Directory Builder, according to the directory type.
- Favorites on the profile: they are marked from the archive or the single listing page.
- Display: you choose grid, list or map as the initial view, and how many listings load at once.
Groups with listings only their members see
When you assign a listing to a group, only that group's members can see it, and they find it on the group's listings tab. It suits an association's internal directory, a group of suppliers or any listing reserved for those who belong.
The group admin controls that connection. When creating a group they tick the option to have listings; on an existing one they do it from Manage, and under Connected Listings they search listings by name and select the ones they want.
Since the assignment limits who sees the listing, try it first with a sample one if that listing must also attract visitors from the general directory.
The listing joins the community conversation
- Automatic activity: with the option enabled, a new listing creates an update in the user's activity.
- Share on the timeline: the listing's share menu gains an option so any visitor can take it to their own timeline. You can change that option's text.
- Messages to the owner: the BuddyPress Message widget adds a button to the listing card, its page or both. The message reaches the normal BuddyPress inbox.
One way into the site and what to activate first
Two redirects send visitors to the BuddyPress login and registration pages instead of the Directorist ones, and you do not need to map fields for it to work. A BuddyPress-compatible theme is recommended, though not required. To set it up:
- Install and activate Directorist and BuddyPress, and then the extension.
- In the BuddyPress settings, turn on the User Groups component, for group listings, and Private Messaging, for messages.
- Open Directorist Settings, Extension Settings, BuddyPress, and review its three sections: User Profile, Group Directory and Pages.
- Drag the message widget in the Directorist builder.
- Create a test group, assign a listing to it and check it with a member account and one outside the group.
OneListing Pro, Live Chat and GeoDirectory
This extension starts from Directorist. For the directory's look, OneListing Pro is a theme made for that plugin.
If you prefer real-time conversations between users and businesses, Directorist Live Chat is a private messaging system with email alerts for new chats. And if your directory runs on GeoDirectory, GeoDirectory BuddyPress Integration plays a similar role, with profile tabs for listings, reviews and favorites.
Three answers for planning the integration
Does it work without BuddyPress?
No. Directorist and BuddyPress must both be installed and active.
Who can link listings to a group?
Group admins, as long as group listings are enabled in the extension settings.
Do users have to register twice?
With the redirects enabled, Directorist login and registration lead to the BuddyPress pages, and you do not need to map fields.
