About Directorist dPlace – Tourism & Travel WordPress Directory Theme

A travel directory is judged city by city

Building a tourism directory often ends in an unordered list of businesses, a search box that can't tell a hotel from a shop, and listings nobody dares to review. Travelers don't search for your site, they search for a city. If someone looks for Prague and finds a single listing, it feels like an empty directory, even if you have a hundred in other cities. dPlace is designed to organize content by destination and category, so you are better off launching a few cities that are well filled than many half-empty ones.

Search, filters and views in dPlace

The search box combines a keyword (food, restaurant, shopping) with a city, and offers advanced filters that really help people who travel:

  • Price range with minimum and maximum, and levels from $ to $$$$.
  • Radius search in miles, useful for "what is near my hotel".
  • Open now and a filter by rating.
  • Categories and tags: the demo includes Coworking, Culture, Education, Hotel, Place, Restaurant, Shopping and Tour.

Results can be shown as a grid, a list or a two- or three-column map. Each listing shows its rating, number of reviews, location, categories, price level and whether it is open or closed. There are also category and location pages, an author profile, a user dashboard, a form to add listings, and sign-in with registration or Facebook.

A word on expectations: what the demo shows is a directory with listings, reviews and search, not a booking system. If your business needs visitors to book or pay for tours on the site, check in the demo what a listing's flow offers before assuming anything. The listings, fields and dashboard also depend on the directory part that comes with the theme, so verify what has to be active for it to work like the demo.

Questions asked by people building a destination directory

Is it only for travel?

No. The demo categories mix hotels and tours with education, coworking and shopping, so it also fits a city or leisure guide.

Can any visitor add listings?

The theme includes registration, a user dashboard and a page to add listings, so businesses can submit their own. Decide beforehand whether you will review them or let them in freely.

Does it have a blog?

Yes: posts with or without a sidebar and at full width. It works for travel guides.

Is there a map?

There are two- and three-column map views, alongside the listings.

Pages and blocks to build the home page

The demo home page is built from reusable blocks: directory search, location box, featured listings, call to action, blog posts, team, testimonials, contact details, info boxes and counters. With them you can show trending cities, top categories and popular places without writing a home page from scratch. It also includes About Us, Contact and 404 pages, and an email subscription in the footer.

Replace the sample content before publishing

The demo is full of filler that should not reach your site: lorem ipsum texts, cities with one to four listings, identical ratings and a category spelled "Restaurent". The counters for destinations, visitors and reviews in the footer are part of the sample design, not figures you will have. Replace them with your own data or remove them.

Start with your categories and main cities, load real listings with photos, and check on mobile how the filters look, because that is where travelers tend to search.
