About Dokan Pro eCommerce Marketplace Plugin
A marketplace has two customers, and the first one is the vendor
Building a marketplace looks like building a big shop, and it is not. A shop has one customer: the one who buys. A marketplace has two, and the order matters. Buyers arrive if there is a catalogue, the catalogue arrives if there are vendors, and vendors only stay if selling with you takes less work than selling on their own.
That is why small marketplaces almost never die from a lack of buyers. They die earlier: the vendor uploads ten products, does not understand how much is deducted, waits weeks to get paid and leaves. The question that decides whether to buy this plugin is not what the buyer sees, but what the vendor goes through.
Dokan is built around that part. Each vendor has their own dashboard on the public side of the site, without entering the WordPress admin, which is reserved for the administrator.
The dashboard, commissions and modules of Dokan Pro
- Vendor dashboard for products, orders, shipping, real time earnings, the look of their store, bulk editing and balance withdrawals.
- Commissions as a fixed amount or a percentage of the sale, adjustable per vendor and deducted automatically.
- Variable and downloadable products, which in Dokan belong to the Pro version.
- Withdrawals via PayPal, bank transfer or Skrill, and modules for Stripe Connect, Stripe Express, PayPal Marketplace and MANGOPAY.
- More than forty modules, including vendor verification, vendor reviews, per store support, table rate shipping, request for quotation, auctions and a staff manager.
What makes a vendor stay
Getting paid without having to ask. Outside the integrated methods, withdrawals are manual, and every manual payment is an email and a wait. Deciding before launch which payment module you will use is deciding how much treasury work you keep for yourself.
A commission people understand. Fixed or a percentage, but written somewhere the vendor can read before signing up. Commission disputes are almost always disputes over a rule nobody published.
Buyers who trust vendors they do not know. Vendor verification and per store reviews exist for that: the buyer does not trust Dokan, they trust that you have checked who is selling.
Vendors, complaints and tax: what is still yours
It does not bring vendors. The software handles day to day operations, not the launch, and the launch is the hard part.
Nor does it take away your responsibility towards the buyer. If a vendor does not ship, the complaint lands on your site's brand.
And it does not handle tax. In the European Union, the DAC7 directive has required since 2023 that operators of platforms connecting vendors with buyers collect data on those vendors and report every year to the tax authority what they have been paid. If you only sell your own products it does not apply; if you open up to third parties, it is worth discussing with your adviser before the first sign up.
WooCommerce, Dokan Lite and a launch with few vendors
WooCommerce is essential, and recent versions of Dokan install it for you. Dokan Pro is installed on top of the free version, without deleting it. It needs WordPress 7.0 or higher and PHP 7.4 or higher.
- Install Dokan Lite and let it install WooCommerce.
- Upload Dokan Pro and activate it without removing the free one.
- Fill in the wizard carefully, especially commissions and withdrawals.
- Launch with a few trusted vendors before opening sign up to anyone.
Alternatives in the catalogue
On the same multivendor ground on top of WooCommerce there are WC Vendors Pro, YITH WooCommerce Multi Vendor Premium and WooCommerce Product Vendors. And if you are missing the design, Wolmart is a theme built for multivendor marketplaces.
