A public S3 link is a link that gets shared
Download Monitor Amazon S3 Extension lets you keep managing your downloads with Download Monitor, but with your S3 files served with time-limited access.
What Download Monitor Amazon S3 Extension does with each link
You link the S3 file the way you would link any other file in Download Monitor, using a non-public URL. The extension detects that it is an Amazon S3 link and appends the correct query string, the one that allows timed access. That way, a URL someone saves no longer works forever.
Once you add your Amazon AWS access keys, the rest is automatic.
It needs Download Monitor and your AWS keys
It is an add-on: it doesn't work alone and it doesn't replace your Amazon account or the organization of your files. Here is what it covers and what is up to you:
- Covers: recognizing S3 links and adding expiring access to them.
- Covers: keeping your downloads managed from Download Monitor.
- Up to you: installing Download Monitor, the base it works on.
- Up to you: having an Amazon AWS account with your files already uploaded to S3 and generating your access keys.
- Up to you: using non-public links on Amazon, because the extension works with that type of link.
If your files live on your own server, it is no use to you
The extension only acts on links to Amazon S3. If your downloads are hosted on your website's server or on another service, it adds nothing. Nor is it a payment system or a way to control who buys: it protects the link's expiry, it doesn't decide who gets to see it.
Questions before connecting S3 to your downloads
Do I have to move my files?
No: the extension works with files that are already on Amazon S3, linked from Download Monitor.
Does it work without Download Monitor?
No. It is a Download Monitor extension and needs that plugin installed.
What do I need from Amazon?
An AWS account with your files in S3 and your access keys, which you add in the plugin. With that, the extension takes care of the rest.
What happens if someone copies the link?
The link gives timed access, so after that time it is no longer a valid way to download. That is exactly the difference from a public S3 link.
