About Easy Social Share Buttons for WordPress

Adding share buttons seems trivial until you realise the usual bar covers your content on mobile, can't tell a blog post from a product page, and doesn't show which buttons your audience really uses. Easy Social Share Buttons tries to solve all of that with a single plugin, and it's best understood by walking through a concrete case.

A blog with a shop: from a loose bar to buttons where sharing happens

Imagine a site that publishes articles and sells products with WooCommerce. What gets shared on a blog and what gets shared in a shop doesn't happen at the same moment: an article is shared after reading it, a product is shared when someone sees the photo. That's why where you put the button matters, not just which one you use.

The plugin offers 27 predefined display methods. They include bars above or below the content, vertical floating buttons, left and right sidebars, top and bottom bars, popups, fly-in buttons from either side, buttons on images (on media) and a bar made specifically for WooCommerce. You can enable several at once and combine them with shortcodes.

Step 1: choose a style without designing from scratch

There is a library of more than 40 ready-made styles that install with one click, and you can try as many as you like until you find the one that fits your site. Some imitate the look of well-known sites such as Mashable, CopyBlogger, AddThis and Upworthy. Afterwards you customise colours, texts and icons by dragging and dropping.

Step 2: decide which buttons appear and on which device

The plugin is compatible with more than 50 social networks. Besides sharing, you can add:

  • Utility buttons: print, send by email, copy link, bookmark, QR code, previous and next post.
  • Native buttons for like, follow and subscribe, with a privacy button for the user.
  • Shareable quotes (click-to-tweet) with four templates.
  • Facebook comments instead of the WordPress ones.

Buttons can be ordered automatically by number of shares and activated only on specific devices, for example mobile only. If most of your traffic comes from phones, this saves you from a bar that gets in the way on desktop.

Step 3: turn visits into subscribers and followers

This is where the plugin goes beyond sharing. It includes mailing list subscribe buttons with direct integration with Mailchimp, GetResponse, myMail, MailPoet, MailerLite, Campaign Monitor, Active Campaign, SendinBlue and Jetpack, or with your own forms through a shortcode. You can also show an Instagram feed, live chat with Facebook Messenger and Skype, and FOMO-style social notifications to encourage sharing.

A word on expectations: it is a plugin loaded with options. If you only want three fixed icons, you will have to ignore a good part of the panel. And the chats and notifications depend on you having active accounts on those platforms.

Step 4: place buttons by hand with shortcodes

It comes with ten shortcodes and a generator to show the buttons wherever you want or include them in the theme code. It's useful when a specific template, such as a landing page, needs different buttons from the rest of the site.
