About FacetWP Map Facet Addon
Putting a map next to a listing of properties, shops, venues or routes often ends up as two worlds that don't talk to each other: a map with fixed pins and a separate filter that doesn't move it. The visitor filters and the map still shows everything, or moves the map and the listing doesn't notice.
The map in FacetWP Map Facet Addon is not a listing, it is a facet
Here is the idea worth getting straight before you buy: the map does not replace your listing. It shows one marker for each geocoded result of a FacetWP listing that is already on the page, and it is filtered by the other facets. It works like any other facet type.
If the listing doesn't exist, the map doesn't appear, because it has no query to latch onto. If you don't want the listing to be visible, you can hide it with CSS, but it still has to be on the page.
Walkthrough: from searching "near me" to seeing only what matters
- Step 1, the visitor types a location and a radius. For this it is combined with a Proximity facet, which returns results within a radius from a point.
- Step 2, the map reframes itself. When the location and radius are set or changed, the map zooms in or out to show only the places within that radius.
- Step 3, a marker appears at the chosen point. It is a yellow pin by default that can be customized, disabled or excluded from marker clustering.
- Step 4, the visitor pans or zooms the map. If you enable map filtering, the listing refreshes instantly and shows only what falls inside the visible window. If you don't want it, you can hide that button.
Any other facet (categories, ranges, search) also trims the markers.
What it needs to work
You need a valid Google Maps API key, entered in the FacetWP settings. Without it, neither the map nor the Proximity facet works.
Old add-on or built-in map: the decision behind FacetWP Map Facet Addon
This add-on corresponds to the legacy version of the map. In recent versions of FacetWP the map is already built into the main plugin, and to use that new map the add-on must be uninstalled. Version 1.2 of the add-on is the last one that will ever exist.
- If you already use it, it will keep working until Google removes the old script loading method or the legacy markers, which are already marked as deprecated.
- Migrating to the new map is optional but recommended, and it involves many breaking changes, so read the instructions first.
- If you are starting a project from scratch, the sensible choice is to use the built-in map and not install this add-on.
