The WordPress gallery works up to photo fifty
With ten images, the gallery block WordPress ships does its job. With five hundred, the problem stops being the design and becomes something else: the page takes an eternity to load, the visitor cannot find what they are looking for and there is no way to organise anything by subject.
FooGallery is built for that second case, and its useful part is not the pretty layouts but how it handles volume.
What it solves with large collections
- Filtering and live search, by tags and categories, with multi-level filter controls.
- Dynamic galleries, filling themselves from other sources rather than by hand.
- Loading in portions, so five hundred photos do not all arrive on the first screen.
- Video alongside photos, importing from YouTube, its short videos and Vimeo, or self-hosted.
The layouts and the lightbox
Grid, slider, polaroid style and spotlight, with hover effects and colour sorting. The lightbox comes in the free version already, which is one of the few that gets it properly done.
And for anyone selling with photographs
There is a commerce layer: product galleries connected to WooCommerce, with variations, buttons and sale ribbons over the image, and downloads of files associated with a master product. Watermarking and image protection too.
On watermarking, worth being precise: it works, but not as a lock. Its real value is different: a marked photo shared around still carries your name on it, and that brings visits. It works as a signature, not as a padlock.
What to check before buying
The features are split across tiers. Filtering, search and video are not in the entry tier, and the WooCommerce side is only in the highest one. Before deciding, worth listing what you genuinely need and checking which tier holds each thing, because buying the wrong one is easy.
