About GeoDirectory Ajax Duplicate Alert
For the directory where users submit their own listings (and for the one that doesn't)
When you open a directory so anyone can publish their business, the problem isn't a lack of listings, it's too many: the same venue added by the owner, by an employee and by an enthusiastic customer, each writing the title their own way. This plugin is a GeoDirectory add-on that warns the user at the moment of submitting the listing, before the duplicate reaches your database.
It suits you if you receive submissions from the front end and don't want to spend your afternoons cleaning up repeated listings. It suits you less if you load everything yourself from a file or from the admin area: there, a warning to the user isn't what you need. And remember it doesn't work alone: it needs the core GeoDirectory plugin.
What GeoDirectory Ajax Duplicate Alert compares against what already exists
The check happens in real time, while the user fills in the form, and compares the new listing with those already saved. You can enable or disable each of these fields:
- Listing title
- Address
- Zip/post code
- Phone number
- Email address
If any of the enabled fields matches an existing entry, a warning appears to the user.
Choosing which fields to watch
Not all fields are equally useful, and enabling them all isn't always best. The title is the easiest to compare, but also the most misleading: two hair salons in different cities may share a name without being duplicates. Phone and email are usually more reliable for spotting the same business, and the address helps catch one that signs up under a different trade name.
A reasonable rule: if your directory is local, the title plus the phone or address is usually enough. If it covers many cities, try not to rely on the title alone, or you'll get warnings that make no sense and users who get tired of them.
Warning messages that sound like your directory
Each field can have its own error message. If you don't customize one, a general warning is used. It helps you be more specific: saying a phone number already exists is not the same as saying a similar title exists. A clear message reduces queries from users who think the site is blocking them for no reason.
Different rules for each content type
If you use GeoDirectory's Custom Post Type add-on, each content type can have its own settings and messages. In a directory with businesses and events, for example, you can check the phone number on businesses and not on events.
What the warning doesn't solve
- It's a warning to the user: don't count on automatic cleanup of duplicates you already have.
- It compares the fields you enable; a listing with a changed name and other different details may get through without a warning.
If you already carry a directory with many repeats, you'll have to clean them by hand: this plugin prevents new duplicates, it doesn't clean up old ones.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work without GeoDirectory?
No. It's an add-on for the core plugin and requires it to be installed.
Can I compare only the phone number?
Yes, each field is enabled or disabled separately, so you can leave on only the one you care about.
Can I write my own messages?
Yes. Each field supports its own message; if you leave it blank, a general one is shown.
Can I apply different rules to each content type?
Yes, with GeoDirectory's Custom Post Type add-on, which allows separate settings and messages per type.
