About GeoDirectory Buddypress Integration

A directory where people come in, look around and leave

A directory of venues, routes or services often has a quiet problem: the visitor checks a listing, maybe leaves a review, and never comes back. There is no profile to look at, no trace of what they did and no reason to return. GeoDirectory Buddypress Integration connects GeoDirectory with BuddyPress so each user has their own space where what they contribute to the directory is visible.

The idea behind it: in a directory, the people who add the most value are those who write reviews and publish listings, and they almost never get anything visible in return. A public profile with their activity is that reward.

What GeoDirectory Buddypress Integration does with your users

  • Unified registration: GeoDirectory starts using the BuddyPress registration form, so anyone who signs up to the directory also joins your BuddyPress network.
  • Automatic activity: each user's listings and reviews are added to their BuddyPress activity stream, with nothing to configure beyond activating the add-on.
  • Directory tabs in the profile: each BuddyPress profile shows the user's submitted listings, reviews and favorite listings.

It needs BuddyPress and GeoDirectory

It is an add-on and does not work on its own: it requires GeoDirectory as the base plugin and the free BuddyPress plugin, installed and active. Install BuddyPress first and then activate this add-on. Nor does it create a directory or a social network by itself: it links two pieces you must already have set up.

Frequently asked questions before buying

Can I build something like Yelp or TripAdvisor with it?

That is the approach it proposes: a directory with listings and reviews, combined with BuddyPress profiles, activity and groups. The result depends on your content and your community, not on the plugin.

Can I set up user groups?

Groups are a BuddyPress feature, which comes with its own plugin. This add-on integrates the directory with that network.

Does it change registration for my existing users?

It changes the form used for new registrations. If you already have users, check on a test copy how their listings and reviews appear on their profile.

Ideas to get the most out of a themed community

It works especially well when the directory revolves around a specific interest: a hobby, an area or an activity. There, a profile with reviews and favorites makes social sense, because members recognize each other by what they recommend. In a generic, massive directory, the profile adds less.

Think about moderation too: once reviews show up in the activity stream, any dubious or fake review will be more visible. It is worth reviewing how you manage reviews before opening registration.

BuddyPress first, then the add-on

The order of setup matters. Install and configure BuddyPress, activate the add-on and run a full test: sign up as a new user, publish a listing, write a review and mark a favorite. Then check that user's profile and activity stream. If something does not appear where you expected, it is better to find out now than with real users.
