About GeoDirectory Social Importer
When every listing is filled in by hand, the directory never takes off
A new directory has a problem you don't see until you launch: nobody wants to fill in a long form to appear on a site that has no visitors yet. Businesses already have their phone number, opening hours and photos on Facebook, Yelp or TripAdvisor, and typing it all again feels like wasted effort. Many give up halfway through the form.
GeoDirectory Social Importer targets exactly that point: whoever adds a business pastes the URL of their page, and the essential details show up already in the add listing form.
What data is pulled in from a Facebook, Yelp or TripAdvisor URL
The plugin tries to import the following, when available on the source page:
- Title and description
- Business hours
- Address and GPS coordinates
- Category (only if the wording matches one of your categories)
- Tags
- Images, videos and logo
- Phone number, email and website
Importing by URL with no API keys to set up
The Facebook and TripAdvisor APIs have become more and more restrictive and hard to set up. That is why the plugin parses the page URL directly, so you don't have to build any API setup in order to import.
Google My Business listings can also be imported, but in that case the user must connect their account.
Posting to Facebook or Google Business needs API setup
The plugin can also work the other way round: post a submitted listing to Facebook or to your Google Business listing posts. This part does require setting up the relevant API. If you only want to import, you don't need it.
This is the split between what is solved and what you will have to cover elsewhere:
- Solved: filling in the submission form from a Facebook, Yelp or TripAdvisor URL.
- Solved: importing from Google My Business if the user connects their account.
- Needs setup: posting listings to Facebook or Google Business (API required).
- On your own: loading hundreds of businesses at once. The import is not bulk, it is a one-time import per URL.
- On your own: keeping data up to date. There is no later sync; if the business changes its hours on Facebook, the listing won't know.
- Another plugin: signing users up with Facebook is done with the Social Login add-on for UsersWP.
GeoDirectory Social Importer requirements
It is a GeoDirectory add-on: it does not work on its own and needs the core plugin installed. It is designed for directories where businesses or their managers add their own listings, not for filling a site in one go from an external database.
Since categories are only assigned when they match yours, it is worth naming them with the same terms the networks use (for example, "Restaurant" rather than "Local gastronomy").
Frequently asked questions
Can I import hundreds of businesses at once?
No. Each import is individual, from one URL, and happens only once.
Do I need API keys to import?
Not to import from Facebook, Yelp or TripAdvisor via URL. You do need them to post listings to Facebook or Google Business.
Is the data updated if the business changes on its page?
No, there is no systematic update. What is imported stays as a copy from the moment of the import.
Does it assign the category automatically?
Only if the source category text matches one of the categories you created in your directory.
Can my users sign up with Facebook using it?
No. For that there is the Social Login add-on for UsersWP.
