About Gravity Perks Blocklist

Spammers keep testing your form until they find the gap

A public form receives everything: SEO pitches, emails from disposable domains, usernames that imitate the administrator and promo codes that should never have circulated. And whoever sends spam doesn't give up after the first error: they try variations to see what happens. That's why a filter that only rejects with a red message shows them where the limit is.

Gravity Perks Blocklist is an add-on for Gravity Forms that checks what the visitor types against a list of forbidden words and, if there's a match, blocks the submission.

One list for comments and forms

You don't have to maintain a new list. The plugin uses the WordPress Disallowed Comment Keys (Settings > Discussion), with one word, phrase or IP address per line. What you already block in comments is also blocked in your forms.

  • A single field: you enable it in the field's Perks tab, useful when you only worry about the free-text message or the username.
  • The whole form: you enable it in the Restrictions section of the form settings and all supported fields are checked on submit.
  • IP ranges: besides single IPs, you can block whole ranges using CIDR notation.

If a field fails, the visitor sees an error telling them it contains disallowed words.

Rejecting silently so they stop probing

This is the most useful part against persistent spam: with the gpb_enable_honeypot hook, the submission is rejected but appears to have worked to the visitor. Whoever automates spam gets no clues to look for a way around. That said, it requires adding a code snippet; it is not a switch in the dashboard.

Beyond spam, the same list serves other uses:

  • Blocking specific emails or domains.
  • Reserving names such as admin, your team's name or brand terms.
  • Preventing leaked or expired promo codes.
  • Keeping the list up to date by pasting public word lists or using plugins that add keys automatically.

Is Gravity Perks Blocklist enough or do you need a full anti-spam tool?

It is a text and IP filter, not a system that scores behavior. It works well as an added layer on top of a captcha, not as a replacement. And it has two limits worth knowing before you fill the list:

  • It matches words inside other words: if you block Race, Racer will be blocked too.
  • Because the visitor's IP and user agent are also checked, if you include a period in the list you will block every submission, since IPs contain periods.

Can I change the error message?

Yes, with the gpb_validation_message hook. It requires a bit of code.

Does it check every field type?

In whole-form mode it only validates the fields the plugin supports, not necessarily all of them.

What do I do if it blocks nothing?

Check that it is enabled on the field or in Restrictions, that each word is on its own line, and run a conflict test by deactivating other plugins.

Do I need to use it with another comments plugin?

No: solo necesitas Gravity Forms and the WordPress Disallowed Comment Keys list.
