About Gravity Perks Nested Forms

Player 1, Player 2… Player 12: the form that never gets the size right

Registering a team, a company with its employees or a make with its models usually ends up as a form with one row of fields per person. There are always too many for the small team and too few for the big one. The person filling it in gets lost, and whoever manages the responses receives a flat, huge entry that is hard to sort.

The figure that shapes the design, how many people or items will be registered, is exactly the one you don't know in advance. That's why copying fields doesn't scale: each participant needs to be its own entry.

Gravity Perks Nested Forms: a child form inside the parent form

The plugin adds a new field type to Gravity Forms, Nested Form. In it you choose another form that is used to collect "child" entries, and when the main form is submitted those entries are attached to the "parent" entry. You can register a team and its players, a company and its employees, a make and its models, all on the same form.

Sums, counts and a feed for each child

  • Calculations: you can pull data from the child forms into the parent with Sum, Total and Count.
  • Feeds: they can be processed when each child is submitted or only when the parent form is submitted. That allows actions such as registering a user for each child entry.
  • Appearance: the interface for the children is easy to handle and the template is flexible, so you can adapt how they are displayed.

If you have a technical profile, there are hooks and a templating system to extend the behavior.

Decide whether Nested Forms is worth it for your form

It is an add-on: it needs Gravity Forms and Gravity Perks installed and does not work on its own. Nor is it a registration or payment system: it collects and organizes the data, and what you do with it afterwards (creating users, sending it to another service) depends on the feeds and add-ons you have. If your list is fixed and short, regular fields are enough; if the number of items varies, that is where it fits.

Can I register a user for each child?

Yes: feeds can run for each child submitted or only when the parent is submitted. You need the Gravity Forms add-on that creates the users.

Can I add up values from the children in the parent?

Yes, with Sum, Total and Count you can use the children's data in calculations on the main form.

Does it work with Gravity Flow or Gravity PDF?

Test with a real case before committing. How child entries come out in PDFs, emails or approval flows is the first thing to verify, especially if you need a specific format.
