About GravityView DIY Layout Extension

When the List layout falls short

You build a GravityView view, the client looks at it and says: "Can the name go over the photo and the rest sit in two columns?". With the List and Table layouts the answer is usually a custom content field, a filter in the theme or an overridden field template. It works, but that customization lives in files that only the person who wrote them understands.

GravityView DIY Layout tackles exactly that: it lets you write your own HTML and CSS structure inside GravityView's visual editor, without touching PHP template files.

What you can do with HTML inside the GravityView DIY Layout editor

You drag Gravity Forms fields as usual, but now you decide how they are grouped. This is what changes in practice:

  • Your own structure: columns, cards, headers or blocks with the markup you need, using your grid or utility classes if you already work with some.
  • Custom classes, IDs and CSS: you add them in the view itself, with no theme patches or extra plugins.
  • Responsive layouts: since the markup is yours, mobile adaptation depends on your CSS and you stay in control.

One structure for the list and another for the single entry

Multiple-entry views and single-entry views do different jobs. The list has to be quick to scan; the single entry page can be more generous with detail. With DIY Layout you structure each one separately, instead of forcing the same mold on both.

Where you notice it most is maintenance. When the design is in the editor rather than hidden in an overridden template, someone else on the team with basic HTML and CSS knowledge can review and tweak it. For an agency that delivers projects and reopens them months later, that matters more than the time saved on day one.

It suits you if you already make heavy use of custom content fields, modify field content with filters or actions, or have ever had to override GravityView field templates.

DIY Layout or stick with List and Table?

If the List and Table layouts already give you what you need, you don't need this. If every project ends with a pile of exceptions, this is the tool that puts them in order. Before deciding, go over this:

  • It includes no CSS: you provide the look. Without your own styles, the result will be an unstyled structure.
  • It requires some HTML and CSS knowledge. No PHP is needed, but it is not a drag-and-drop designer with ready-made templates.
  • It is an extension of GravityView and does not work on its own: you need GravityView and Gravity Forms.

Do I need to code in PHP?

No. The idea is precisely to avoid overridden PHP templates and custom code.

Can I design the single-entry view differently from the multiple-entry one?

Yes, each one supports its own structure.
