About ImagePress WordPress Plugin
An open gallery is decided at the door, not on the front page
Your members, or the guests at a wedding, upload their photos and the site no longer depends on you to fill up. In exchange, what appears in the gallery is decided by whoever uploads it, unless you set the entry rules beforehand.
That is why, on a user-image site, the decision that weighs most comes during setup: who can upload, whether an account is needed and whether each image waits for review. The grid can change any day; cleaning up a gallery full of images that should never have been published is another story.
ImagePress, by butterflymedia (getButterfly), turns WordPress into a site where visitors contribute the photos, with front-end uploads, moderation, collections, profiles and portfolios.
Three entry rules to set on day one
- Who uploads: registered users, submissions without an account, or a global author who receives everything. Guest submissions ask for a name and email, and those fields only appear if the global author is left empty.
- Who reviews: images can wait for approval before going live, or appear immediately with the do-not-moderate option.
- How much gets in: a honeypot field against spam and a default limit of 20 uploads per visitor per hour, adjustable with the
imagepress_rate_limitfilter.
Anonymous upload is available, although it is not the recommended setup. If you turn it on, combine it with prior review.
Uploads, order and each member's profile
- Uploading: a drag and drop uploader with image preview, and bulk upload with a progress bar.
- Organizing: categories, keywords and public or private collections, with galleries sorted and filtered by several criteria.
- Display: grid templates, card designs, an ImageSwipe lightbox, an image carousel and a hero carousel of the newest images.
- Extra material: variants, detail shots, progress shots and videos alongside the main image.
- People: avatars, cover photo, tabbed profile, front-end editing, author portfolios and a member directory.
- Community: likes, following between users, awards and titles, plus front-end login, registration and forgotten password forms.
A wedding will mostly use galleries prepared in advance and collections. A photo club or an art community will get more from profiles and awards.
What your hosting takes on
Images are native WordPress attachments, with no separate storage system. That avoids being tied to a platform, and it also means your server provides the space. Two settings help contain it: an image quality between 80 and 90, and a maximum size of 8192 or 16384 KB.
Videos need the server to declare the MIME types for .mp4, .ogv and .webm.
Its features do not include a flow for a photographer's client to mark and approve photos, or QR codes to hand out to guests.
Your first gallery in five steps
It is worth running this test with an unprivileged user before announcing the gallery.
- Install and activate the plugin, and find the ImagePress menu in the dashboard.
- Set permalinks to the post name structure; with another one, some features may not be available.
- Create the gallery, profile, upload and login pages. The settings can generate them, and the shortcode generator places galleries, forms and collections.
- Define who uploads in the Upload tab and moderation in Settings.
- Upload a photo from a phone and check the whole journey until it is published.
If you upload posts or deliver to clients
If users upload posts or listings, and you want to charge for packages with limits, WP User Frontend Pro revolves around front-end forms and quotas. If you add the photos yourself and only need to show them, Modula Pro creates photo and video galleries in masonry, grid or slider layouts.
For photographers delivering work to a client, picu Pro builds proofing galleries where the client comments on and selects images.
